Bug Description

If a typo is corrected in a translation, the typo will still appear forever as a suggestion. The same is true for a wrongly imported translation in another language.

In short: translations that are definitely wrong appear all over as suggestions. There is no way to remove them.

Solution:
At least team leaders should get the possibility to remove a wrong suggestion permanently from the system. We need a "Remove this suggestion" checkbox.

I need this feature too. I am ashamed my wrong entry many times. Thus the authors should be able to delete their wrong suggestions.

Could someone please confirm that this is a problem that should be looked into someday?

This would need some further discussion. I am concerned with removal of entries which might be used by other packages (thus, you sometimes *can't* remove them, if they are still present in some of the upstream product translations using Launchpad for translations).

However, I do understand the point you are making, so lets try to think about it first before shooting the idea down. Confirming the bug as well :)

I mean those wrong translations should be removable that

1. have been corrected in the package and
2. are therefore unused

In order to not overload the "normal" translation page, could this be deferred to the "one-string" translation page ?

There is discussion elsewhere about a rating system. A quick naive solution (that I think would be good 90% of the time) is to allow translators to click a "thumbs down" or "unhappy smiley" to mark a suggestion as unwanted. Reasons could be typos or unwanted wording (yo momma) that should probably not be used in any distributions or packages. The second step would be a filter that by its default setting hides those thumbed-down suggestions.

I absolutely agree with Simon above me. Official translators should be able to "bury" a suggestion, preventing it from being suggested, not deleting it. Suggestions are a very valuable resource, but if they're wrong the can be rather harming.

However, I don't think there should be a "rating system" and buried suggestions should not affect karma, because it's very easy to create bad entries. The important thing is to have a cleaner and more efficient suggestions list.

I would also find it very useful to be able to remove incorrect or obsolete suggestions.

Some translations are currently full of such entries, which simply clutter the interface. Here's an example, with a short string (with longer ones it gets much worse):

Ofthen when clicking on the links for where the sugestions are used, it turn out they are no longer used there or the link might even be 404 because of reordering of the packages betwean versions or changed string numbers.

This is an old bug, isn't the "discard suggestion" fixing it ?

Even if this old bug has "low" importance, the example below shows that such a feature is a *must* under some conditions.

Have a look at https://translations.launchpad.net/apturlredirector/trunk/+pots/user/en_GB/+translate search for suggestions for "Yes" and read the one starting with "Impact of ARPANS-like legislation on minerals industry in Australia". This suggestion for "Yes" is -unbelievablely- an article with 517 lines and 15534 characters! (Attached as a text file.) Probably someone pasted it by mistake and saved it accidentally, once upon a time.

I'm not sure about the source of it because on the page I referred above it says that was "Suggested in xulrunner-1.9.1 in Ubuntu Karmic package "xulrunner-1.9.1" [ https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/xulrunner-1.9.1/+pots/xulrunner-1.9.1/en_GB/1683/+translate ] by ZhongHan Cai on 2009-09-21". There, it says that it was "Suggested in evince in Ubuntu Natty package "evince" [ https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/evince/+pots/evince/en_GB/19/+translate ] by dyah on 2009-03-12". And finally there it refers again to the fisrst one. As if its a loop.

Anyway, that 517 lines and 15534 characters "article" shows up as a suggestion for "Yes". This is unacceptable.

Obviously there should be a mechanism to remove such suggestions permanetly. As a workaround for now, I wish someone in charge of such things, at least, to manually remove that "article suggestion" for "Yes".

Deniz Ogut, please open a question on https://answers.launchpad.net/rosetta/ for us to handle this. Because it's "critical" in only a few rare cases like this, it's ok for us to do an one-time removal of egregious messages like that.

Numérigraphe, I don't think 'discard suggestion' completely fixes it, though you do have a point.

The problem here is that someone might not be a reviewer and might want to discard their own previous suggestion: the way to do that is eg. to only keep the latest suggestion by a single person.

And the way LP implements external suggestions, a bad suggestion would still show up as a suggestion on other projects as "Suggested in ...".
