Pipelight properly installed, blank screen playing Netflix

Bug Description

Hello-

I am using Linux Mint 15 with KDE and Chrome. I installed Netflix by carefully following the installation instructions. I verified that silverlight was working properly by visiting the suggested test web page and watching yellow balls bounce around, I am using Chrome UA Spoofer and switch to Firefox 15. I am able to log into Netflix and pick a movie. Once I click on play, the screen turns black and nothing happens. I have searched through forums and tried all the solutions I can find, to no avail. Netflix Desktop worked fine for me before I installed KDE, so I think you may be onto something here. With KDE on my system, Netflix Desktop no longer works.

Hi,

we have tested the latest wine version ourself with KDE and its very
unlikely that the problem is related to that. As the bubble ball demo works
as expected it is definitely no problem with embedding the window into the
browser, and the rest should basically be independent of the used desktop
environment.

We also had a user yesterday on IRC, for which the Chrome UA Spoofer didn't
work anymore, but I wasn't able to confirm this myself yet, and at least my
old version still seems to work as expected.

Can you please check with http://fds-team.de/pipelight/ if the user agent
string is the problem and which Silverlight version do you see there. You
should see:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20120427 Firefox/15.0a1
and Silverlight version 5.1.20513.0.

As a workaround you can try to set the user agent via commandline (close
all other browser windows first):

chromium-browser --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:15.0)
Gecko/20120427 Firefox/15.0a1"

If this is not the issue: Did you modify anything manually in the previous
pipelight configuration file (e.g. disable GPU acceleration, ...)? As the
paths have changed in pipelight 0.2.0 with the introduction of
multiplugin-support all these changes are not used anymore.

Hi Sebastian-

Thanks for getting back to me. Here are the results from running the User Agent checker under the Silverlight 5.1 option. The other options were all fails:

Please note: not every user agent works on every site, try multiple ones if something doesn't work!

Hi,

when you visit the diagnostic page, you should see some button to run the plugin (below the address bar).
Please try to do this, and post the full debug output here agian.

The only option I have is the drop-down menu, from which I posted the full output. Here's a screenshot:

Hi,

unfortunately the debug page doesn't seem to work that well on your PC, normally you should either see a bit more debug output immediately or a dialog somewhere, if you want to run the plugin.

As both isn't the case we have to use an alternative method to get the debug output. Close all your browsers first, then open up a terminal, and run there:

google-chrome &> ~/pipelight.log

(the same would also work with other browsers.)

Then visit any page that requires Silverlight (e.g. the diagnostic page, or http://bubblemark.com/silverlight2.html ) and close your browser window again.

Upload the file "pipelight.log" inside your home directory (or post the content just in the answer field). This way we can hopefully find out why it doesn't work anymore.

Hi,

based on the information from other people this problem could also be related to the fact that you didn't agree the license agreement of the ttf-mscorefonts-installer.

Take a look at this FAQ how to get the menu again and how to agree the license agreement:
https://answers.launchpad.net/pipelight/+faq/2441

I'll mark this bug report as incomplete since we really need to know if some of the steps helps, otherwise its impossible to give you further ideas.

I have the same problem with Fedora 20, and Firefox 26 combination. I followed the recommendations on http://fds-team.de/cms/pipelight-installation.htm and used the recommended command to install msttcorefonts package, which was "sudo rpm -i http://sourceforge.net/projects/mscorefonts2/files/rpms/msttcore-fonts-installer-2.6-1.noarch.rpm". I was not asked to agree with the EULA during the installation of this package, the EULA did not even show up on the screen. The faq page recommended in the previous post is specific to debian, and does not seem to apply to fedora, since there is no debconf command in fedora. Therefore, I cannot check EULA acceptance situation in my case, either.

Thanks,

Hi,

can you execute "wine --patches" and post the output of the command?

I think your problem is not related to the core fonts but maybe related to graphic acceleration. You can check this by opening the following website: http://bubblemark.com/silverlight2.html which does not use graphic acceleration (in opposite to netflix). If this is the case your problem is caused by either a missing or incompatible 32 bit libGL. You can disable hardware acceleration by executing "/usr/share/pipelight/configure-silverlight" and answering the question with disable.

It might also help if you post your output of "glxinfo".

The web page http://bubblemark.com/silverlight2.html shows bouncing bubbles without any noticeable problem on my computer. Disabling hardware acceleration did not seem to change anything either.

The output of command "glxinfo" is as follows:

name of display: :0

Major opcode of failed request: 153 (NV-GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 4 ()
Resource id in failed request: 0x5400003

Thanks for helping me troubleshoot.

After posting the previous message, I re-enabled the hardware acceleration and tried Netflix again. This time something new happened. Firefox reported Silverlight crash and provided a link to reload the page. When clicked, the upcoming page reported something went wrong with an error code of N8109.

Hi,

based on your output of "glxinfo" you don't have installed your graphics drivers properly.
Usually you should get some information about the installed driver and available display modes, but since glxinfo just crashes, you probably you should update/reinstall your graphic card drivers, when you want to use HW acceleration.

I assume it still failed after you disabled HW acceleration since you didn't restart your browser completely (and thus the changes had no direct effect). When it starts failing again, please disable HW acceleration again and ensure that the browser is completely restarted (reopening just one window is not sufficient!).

The new error you saw (N8109) means that you haven't yet configured your user agent correctly. Have you already installed a user agent switcher? If not please take a look here, how to do this: https://answers.launchpad.net/pipelight/+faq/2351 . Please select exactly this user agent string:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20120427 Firefox/15.0a1

You can use our diagnostic site to verify that you've configured everything correctly: http://fds-team.de/pipelight

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for your response. I updated my graphic card drivers and I get a meaningful output from the glxinfo command as follws:
http://pastebin.com/cQXiJ0r4

I tried disabling HW accelaration again and this time restarting the browser with no avail.

I am using the user agent switcher 0.7.3 with the exact string you provided.

On the diagnostic site link you provided I fail on Flash and Pipelight checks.

The end result is the dreaded N8109 error.

Thanks for your time.

Hi,

>On the diagnostic site link you provided I fail on Flash and Pipelight
checks.

I assume you mean the check for the user agent and Silverlight/Flash itself
is okay.

This either means you still haven't configured your user agent properly, or
(when you're using for example Ubuntu 13.10) the user-agent switcher itself
does not work. It is a known problem, that most (or even all) user agent
switchers do not work anymore when using the latest version of Chromium on
Ubuntu 13.10.

Please try to use a different browser / user agent switcher or try to set
the user agent via commandline as described in the corresponding FAQ:
https://answers.launchpad.net/pipelight/+faq/2351

If you see additional "failures" on the diagnostic page, please report the
exact messages you see there.
