Bug Description

Since I've installed HPLIP v3.9.6b, duplux printing no longer works with my OfficeJetPro 8500. To be more precise, the duplex option in the print dialog only shows the one side option, and in any application (firefox, openoffice)

It doesn't work either with version 3.9.8.

Config:
- ubuntu 8.04
- HP OfficeJetPro 8500 (909a)
- network-connected

Duplex printing used to work with HPLIP 3.9.2.

Uninstalling (http://hplipopensource.com/node/188) and re-installing HPLIP 3.9.2 is workaround.

Is this a regression ?

I have a similar issue, with a photosmart 7200 series and hplip 3.9.8 under ubuntu jaunty: if I try to select duplex printing in cups, it tells me that this is a mismatch with the paper size (A4).

I just ugraded from 3.9.4b to 3.9.8 and have the same problem. The hplip device manager show the duplex option on, but I only get the one-sided option in any application I print from. I have an HP OfficeJet J6480 connect via wifi to my network. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04.

I also have the same problem.

Although in HP device manager I enable the manual duplex printing mode (two sided - long end), the printer insists on printing single sided! Moreover, the option for duplex printing in Openoffice is greyed out and I cannot find any option for duplex printing in other pieces of software (eg Adobe Acrobat).

I am using hplip 3.9.8, which is the version installed in ubuntu 9.10

Few things to check

1. Run hp-toolbox, click on the printer and go to "Printer Settings" tab
2. Check if option "duplexer" is "on" in "Installable Options" or "Miscellaneous" settings
3. Check if you have a Page Size of type "A4 AutoDuplex" under "General" settings and if selecting it will enable Duplex printing.

Regards,
Suma

I have the same problem with my Officejet Pro 8000:

I'm running PCLinuxOS 2010 (Gnome version) with HPLIP 3.10.5
I have all duplexing options turned on in the HP Device Manager but no matter which application I try, there is NO option for duplex printing. I've tried the "A4 AutoDuplex" suggestion but that doesn't make any difference.

Same for me on Ubuntu 10.10 with a HP Color Laser CP4520 an HPLIP 3.10.2.

Under "Installable Options" I have a "Duplexer Installed" (On/Off - radio buttons) Option,
but it's grayed out.

Under "Print Settings" I have an option "Double-Sided Printing" that I can
set to "Long Edge (Standard)" - doesn't make it print double sided.

There is not "double-sided", "duplex", whatsoever
option under "Miscellaneous"

Tried duplex printing with HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 on Ubuntu 10.10 with latest HPLIP release 3.11.1. Yes "Double-Sided Printing" option is grayed out under "Installable Options", but setting "Long Edge (Standard)" under "Print Settings" tab does the printing double sided.

NO SRIKANTH,
what you wrote is NOT true! The bug is NOT resolved yet, at least on printers like mine!
In the meantime I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and HPLIP 3.11.7 (the very last, one week ago) BUT the Double Sided Printing is NOT WORKING at all, on my H.P. PSC 1510, in spite of the setting "Long Edge (Standard)" and "Duplexer Installed on" (grey).
In WINDOWS XP, on the contrary, everything is good. Do a test, please.

Now I have installed the version 3.11.10 always on Ubuntu 10.10; this new version of HPLIP is intended as a fix of the problem Double Sided Printing?
Are the correct settings: paper A4 Auto-duplex, Duplexer installed, Double Sided Printing Long Edge ?
Please confirm, thank you very much.

Hello, sorry but my printer (HP PSC 1510) does not work properly with double-sided. It prints every page on a new sheet of paper, in sequence (1, 2, 3, ...) and not the odd pages first and the even pages after, as usual in Windows.
Thanks, Enzo.

vonibenz, the duplex option in HPLIP is only for printers with a real duplex unit, not for manual duplex, which means printing odd pages first, turning the deck of printed paper over and printing the even pages on the back sides. AFAIK, manual duplex is not (yet) supported by HPLIP.

Hello vonebenz,

HP PSC 1510 does not support Autoduplex feature and unfortunately 'Manual duplex' feature is not supported by HPLIP till date however windows support it.

FYI: Please see the product specifications.

Hello friends, first of all THANKS for your kind attention to my problem!
Sorry for wasting your time, but now it's evident to me that I must hope for the "Manual Duplex" supported in HPLIP (or in Ubuntu). Many cheap printers does not provide the automatic function double sided; so I suppose that the program improvement in that direction will be very liked to a lot of people.
Thanks again and best regards, Enzo.

I am also affected by this bug using version hplip 3.11.10 and Officejet_Pro_8500_A910. It is not possible to choose Two Sided in the printer dialog box. Under Installable Options in hp-toolbox the option Duplexer Installed is set to On but greyed out. Changing Double-Sided Printing to Short Edge or Long Edge doesn't help. Also, the Page Size "A4 AutoDuplex" is not available. Can't really see why you would need the cups error_log but I will attach it as you request.

Gustav, this job has "Duplex=None" in its job options, needing that from the application single-sided printing was requested. Are you sure that you have set double-sided printing in the application's printing dialog? Does double-sided printing work for you from other applications? Which application did you use? Perhaps your problem is a problem of the application.

Thank you for your response Till. I tried different programs but it is not possible to set two-sided in the printing dialog, so I believe that is where the problem is. Maybe I can test with this option set from the command line.

With
lpr -o sides=two-sided-long-edge document.pdf

My guess is that it would work if only the option was available in the printing dialog.

I managed to fix the problem by editing /etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_Pro_8500_A910.ppd
Changing:
*UIConstraints: *Duplex *OptionDuplex False
*UIConstraints: *OptionDuplex False *Duplex
on line 36 to
*UIConstraints: *Duplex *OptionDuplex True
*UIConstraints: *OptionDuplex True *Duplex
gave me the two-sided options I was missing in the dialog.

If you are on Oneiric (11.10) can you try to install the HPLIP 3.11.12 package from my PPA?

https://launchpad.net/~till-kamppeter/+archive/ppa

Simply run the commands

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:till-kamppeter/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install printer-driver-postscript-hp

in a terminal window and after that your HPLIP is 3.11.2. Can you print duplex now?

This affects me too, with an HP Officejet j6400, duplexer unit is installed.

Like Gustav Svensson, duplex printing works correctly when using:

lpr -o sides=two-sided-long-edge

, but his suggested fix of editing the PPD file has not worked for me.

Running Ubuntu 12.04, hplip version 3.12.6.

The "Duplexer Installed" option is set to yes, but greyed out in the HP Device manager. When attempting to print, there's no "two-sided" option available in the print dialog, and an exclamation mark appears with the text "Some of the settings in the dialog conflict." This disappears when selecting "One sided printing" from the "layout" drop-down. The "Advanced" tab of the print dialog has a checked box next to "Duplexer installed"

As with a few of the other commenters, this used to work correctly, many versions of hplip ago

I am suffering from the same problem. My Photosmart C6200 series has duplexer installed, but it's not possible to turn it on in "Installable Options", controls are simply not accessible.

It's still possible to use duplexer in openoffice if manually select "Device" → "Duplex" as "Installed" and also select "Paper Size" as A4 Borderless/AutoDuplex. But this way is not useful at all if you need to print many documents, because you'll need to select those options for each document.

into

I am seeing the exact same issue with an OfficeJet 6500a Plus e710n-z on Ubuntu 12.10 using HPLIP 3.13.4

I fixed it by running "system-config-printer" from the CLI, deleting all instances of the printer (looks like the HPLIP may have created duplicates) and adding it back.
Then going into the setting of the printer (Right-click, Properties)
Selecting "Installable Options" and checking "Duplexer Installed".
Ok all that, log out and in again.
(This is the exact same as editing the ppd, but might be preferred by those who like a GUI)

Checking in HP shows the duplexer no enabled BUT the main issue of the controls being greyed out is still present.
