I also have the same problem.

Although in HP device manager I enable the manual duplex printing mode (two sided - long end), the printer insists on printing single sided! Moreover, the option for duplex printing in Openoffice is greyed out and I cannot find any option for duplex printing in other pieces of software (eg Adobe Acrobat).

I am using hplip 3.9.8, which is the version installed in ubuntu 9.10
