Blank screen with the latest nv drivers

Bug #96833 reported by Andris Sprūds

Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
xserver-xorg-video-nv (Ubuntu)
Fix Released

Ubuntu-X

Bug Description

Black screen is displayed when booting into X. I applied todays updates, then immediately rebooted. If I remember correctly, there was a new nv driver among the updates.

I am using Feisty Beta, my video card is an old NVIDIA GeForce2 400MX.

I would be delighted to provide any further information.

as requested on irc, here is the log. (xorg.conf was a fresh dpkg-reconfigured one, "nv" set as driver)

it seems that the driver/server did indeed hang.. this is the last line from the log:

(==) NV(0): Write-combining range (0xd0000000,0x8000000)

We have a permission to a new driver version (2.0). When it is uploaded you can try again. In the meantime please use the nvidia-legacy driver.

I'm a moron.. there really _was_ an update, and the driver you have is the 2.0-0ubuntu1. There is one fix for a possible hang, so I'll apply that one.

Just upgraded to xserver-xorg-video-nv-2.0-0ubuntu2 and I have the same behaviour. Currently and since the 2.0-0ubuntu1 upgrade only vesa works for me on a Geforce2 MX-400.

i installed latest update too. synaptic says about the version:
1:2.0.0-0ubuntu2

at the moment i use a manually installed nvidia 9631.

so this is how i tested it:
-> sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and choose "nv"
-> edited linux-restricted-modules-common from "nv" to ""

result: same blackscreen, no response to ctrl+alt+f1 or ctrl+alt+backspace

attached the log of this boot-process

Alright. The nv driver did _not_ have _any_ of the patches applied :) I just uploaded a new one, but you can get it here, too:

http://users.tkk.fi/~tjaalton/xorg72/new/xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.0.0-0ubuntu3_i386.deb

please test and tell about the results.

Thanks for testing!

gQuigs: please make sure you have the latest version (-0ubuntu3), and if it still won't work you can file another bug.

I had the same problem. I installed Feisty Beta, yesterday, 27 March 2007 and all worked fine. Then I applied the updates (92 at the time) and rebooted. When gdm should have started I just got a blank screen.

I have the nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200. I checked my version...

A little OT question (maybe stuff for another bug): switching from nv to nvidia driver I used the "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" command.

It seems that this command resets the XkbLayout option to "us" instead the previous "it" - Italian keyboard layout - ingoring the system locale too.

Anybody with non-us layout noticed this?
