I had the same problem. I installed Feisty Beta, yesterday, 27 March 2007 and all worked fine. Then I applied the updates (92 at the time) and rebooted. When gdm should have started I just got a blank screen.
I have the nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200. I checked my version...

ii xserver-xorg-video-nv 2.0.0-0ubuntu2 X.Org X server -- NV display driver
I tried an apt-get update at 08:40 CUT today, 28 March 2008. However, xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.0.0-0ubuntu3 still hadn't hit the mirrors. So I got it from the URL above...
# sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.0.0-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 103796 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:2.0.0-0ubuntu2 (using xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.0.0-0ubuntu3_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement xserver-xorg-video-nv ...
Setting up xserver-xorg-video-nv (2.0.0-0ubuntu3) ...
Rebooted and all works fine.
Thanks ever so much for your hard work last night. I got frustrated and just hoped that a better man than myself would have the answer by the morning.... and they did!
