Problems compiling with Hebrew

I am having problems using sblclass to compile with Hebrew. Here is my setup:

- Mac OS X 10.5.8
- SBL Hebrew font installed
- MacTeX Installation – the most recent (just a few days ago)
- All the packages that were present in TeX Live 2009
- TeXShop with the LaTeX option; have also tried to make file with XeTeX and XeLaTeX
- All the .sty and .cls files have been placed in the ~/Library/texmf/tex/latex directory; other directories were created as directed on R. Fischer's wikipage

I have tried using \begin{hebrew} WXYZ \end{hebrew} and also the \he{wxyz} options to input Hebrew and it continues to give me an error.

I have tried entering WXYZ as both Hebrew characters and English letter - both to no avail. The compile always terminates. Typing in Greek does just fine.

Can you post the output of the compile (i.e. pipe stdout to a file and upload it)? I'd like to see the order the files were loaded in. Similarly, upload the *.log file here.

Well the LaTeX error is the error i've always got from the class, which is
why I use XeLaTeX. The XeLaTeX error is due to the order in which packages
are being loaded, which I have fixed at least twice before.

Has anyone put any usepackage commands in?

I'm always using a slightly older version of sblessay, because this XeLaTeX
error keeps cropping up. The version I'm using is attached, see if that
works for you for the moment.

I'll let Robert take a look at the LaTeX error and see if he can solve it.
John, ff the attached file works for you for the moment, then I'll take
another look at the XeLaTeX regression after my exams at the beginning of
June.

Thanks, Pete. The file you gave needs some modification to work with the newer sbllang files (sbllangbase/sbllanggr/sbllanghe) - I haven't tried that modification yet as I'm still a newbie to the TeX code. In the newest file the only major difference I see is the creation of \ifxetexsbl. There are file also has a few more \DeclareOptions.The only entered \usepackage commands that I can immediately spot are for the sbllangfiles:

Groan. I think Robert has added some, but this error is still a mystery to
me. Maybe it is a quirk of MacTex.

But bidi.sty is still being loaded before anything else in my version.

I thought you just addedd lines to load bidi.sty and xunicode.sty
explicitly before much else happens. This is still the case in the svn
version. Is this right Pete? Or did you do something else as well?
(There are a lot of differences between your file and the current svn.)

The LaTeX error means that your TeX system can't find the default Hebrew
font... which is kind of weird now that I think about it :).

do you get any output from the command:

    kpsewhere jerus10.mf

from a terminal?

I am assuming that you will get nothing. If this is the case, then I'm
not sure how the default setup of MacTex handles Hebrew with LaTeX. On
my linux distro, ivritex is one of the packages that provides these
hebrew files. You could try grabing it from
http://http://ivritex.sourceforge.net/

Perhaps MacTeX has broken hebrew support and it is assumed that everyone
will use Xetex.

I managed to convert SBL Hebrew to tfm format such that it can be used
with pdfTeX. I could dump these changes along with the SBL hebrew font
into the repository so that it is used by default.

Any comments? I know most of you use xetex, so perhaps it's not worth
it, but I'm still a fan of trying to get things to work with all tex
flavours.

I haven't been able to do the same with SBL Greek. There is something
about the font that pdftex doesn't like.

Yes, the jerus10 font is missing in my distribution. I tried grabbing ivritex but that didn't seem to contain it either. I think it would be great if you could upload anything that helps in this. Living in this mystery isn't my idea of fun. :-)

The jerus10 font does seem to be hard to come by, so why it's referenced
in babel/lhecmr.fd as the default font is extremely bizarre...

I need to do some more work before I can distribute SBL Hebrew as the
default font for LaTeX because the installation is complex and I suspect
highly system dependent :(. I can send you the files, but I don't know
how to install them easily on a Mac system - it's not quite a matter of
just putting them into your tex tree, because you need to alter (or
generate) font mapping files for dvips and pdftex, etc.

It would be better if we can figure out a reliable way to use hebrew
using default tex packages, but just about everyone is using XeTeX for
complex scripts now.

Hi all,

I have successfully managed to get LaTeX to use the SBL Greek and Hebrew
fonts and uploaded some experimental support to svn. It is not yet
included in the class files. (No pointing still, but this is too much
effort)

There is an install script to help with installation. This works ok on
my debian system, but I am not sure about under OS X... If someone can
take a look at it and modify it if needs be, that would be great.

to use the SBL fonts, just include

\usepackage{sblhebrew}
\usepackage{sblgreek}

in your document preamble.

It should work, providing you have correctly installed things.

Note, that the dvips path wont work with TrueType fonts.

Hmmm...

I seem to have missed a lot here.

My current working copy is quite behind the curve, yes.

I did make numerous changes to make sure bidi was loaded first, but the
error keeps cropping back up.

Sorry I haven't been in touch, exams. Will take a look in a fortnight and do
a mini code review. Of what's in svn, and report back with suggestions and
possible patches for whatever state the code is in by then.

Also have some updates to bst that I've been meaning to merge for a while,
implementing some more sbl examples (they need tidying up though).

On that, it would be helpful if we had some standardised way to refer to
things in the bib file that are non-standard for tex, but necessary for sbl
compliance. I'll leave it to you, dave to decide what to do on that? If
you want me to make some suggestions I could draft a blueprint.

Your example below uses XeLaTeX, and so it doesn't have the jerus
problem which will only apply to LaTeX.

Your best bet is going to be to use XeLaTeX with the sblessay class as
well. The issue occurring on OS X with the class is related to the order
in which the unicode and bidi packages are loaded.

Also... the example you provided below gives the exact error under
discussion on my system!

  ! Package bidi Error: Oops! you have loaded package xunicode before
  bidi package. Please load package xunicode after bidi package, and
  then try to run xelatex on your document again.

Reversing the order of xltxtra and bidi fixes it for me.

All this means is that I'm totally confused :(

It would be great if you can fiddle with sblessay.cls and
sbllangbase.sty and try and get things loading in an order that works
for you and let me know what that order is.

search in the sblessay.cls for bidi to see where it is loaded. It's
pretty much the first package I think.

note the xetex related loads are in \if blocks.

I'll keep looking into it when I need to procrastinate from exam prep

Pete, totally understandable about the exams. I just finished a May-term intensive so we're in the same boat.

David, thanks for the guidance. I managed to get it to do a XeLaTeX compile via TeXShop. I found there were two instances of a bidi load: one in sblessay.cls and another in sbllangbase.sty. I turned this code into comment with the '%':

% Test for unicode support (through Xetex), and so make sure bidi
% is loaded before xunicode.
%\expandafter\ifx\csname XeTeXpicfile\endcsname\relax
%\else
% \RequirePackage{bidi}
% \RequirePackage{xunicode}
%\expandafter\fi

and made sure xltxtra loaded before bidi in sbllangbase.sty. I also stumbled upon the need to save the file as a UTF-8 Unicode file instead of a TeX file.

So far so good. :-)

It should be in sbllangbase.sty.

The only reason it was put into the class file was the Pete was getting
errors relating to bidi being loaded too late and I couldn't reproduce
them.

I since had a thought. Pete, do you use a front end? Some front ends stick
extra stuff related to unicode in the preamble, that could be causing
grief on your system. Try a simple file, ensuring you save it it utf-8
format and then run xelatex on it from the command line and see if that
makes a difference.

I have installed dokuwiki on my server and set up a starting page for
SBL LaTeX.

Anyone can register an account, but I will then need to give write
access. Dokuwiki uses namespaces, so I have made an sbllatex namespace.
If any of you want to add info and documentation, I suggest putting it
here. we can use it for blueprint stuff too since launchpad doesn't
really let you discuss much for these.

If you haven't used dokuwiki before, it seems pretty simple to use. It
gives a bit of documentation on the site when you are editing regarding
its markup.

call every file sbllatex:*, and I'll make sure you have permission to
creat and modify under that namespace.

When you've created an account (from the login page) drop me an email
and I'll set up permissions.

I've made a page at

that can be used to document and discuss the bib format supported by the
style.

I'm open for any suggestions on how to lay out this page. Put something
up, and we can always change it later.

The current svn does not work for me. It triggers the bidi loaded before
xunicode error...

Can you check if this change works for you? fontspec and xunicode are
loaded by xltxtra. Double check that your front end is not fiddling with
anything and your test file is in utf-8 format.

Arrggghhh! :( No the diff isn't backwards.

Ok... I think I have it.

My version of bidi is not the most current version in CTAN. TeXlive
seems to be a little behind. If I update to the version from CTAN, then
it works ok.

Finally, some progress.

I therefore propose the following patch to the current svn, to just tidy things up.

The final thing related to this bug is to test the install and usage of
sblhebrew.sty and sblgreek.sty under LaTeX (not XeLaTeX). So, I would

Yeah - that is right. But try the current svn first and see if the
changes that have been made fix your problem with xelatex.

I think it is fixed for xelatex. My problems were due to an outdated
bidi. Using the latest bidi from ctan, the current subversion source
works... I think :) Be good if you can confirm this, Pete.

I'm not yet finished implementing the SBL fonts under latex yet - I
still have to do a bunch of work on kerning for the tfm file :( - The
Greek implementation for latex with its 256 char limit is a pain.

I'm happy with the SBL Hebrew font implementation under LaTeX now, and believe that the bidi/xunicode problems are sorted out under XeLaTeX, so am going to make this fixed. I'm still working on the SBL Greek font implementation under LaTeX, but will open a new bug report for it, as it is not directly related to this one.
