I've checked if the update process was the problem : I've purged Adobe Reader package and checked that there was no "/opt/Adobe" directory. When I install directly from the ".deb" package I still get the same problem :
$ sudo dpkg -i adobereader-deu_9.3.1-2_amd64.deb
   Selecting previously deselected package adobereader-deu.
   (Reading database ... 193234 files and directories currently installed.)
   Unpacking adobereader-deu (from adobereader-deu_9.3.1-2_amd64.deb) ...
   Setting up adobereader-deu (9.3.1-2) ...
   dpkg: error processing adobereader-deu (--install):
       subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10
   Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ...
   Processing triggers for man-db ...
   Errors were encountered while processing:
       adobereader-deu

(increasing dpkg debug level to 1000 does not add any useful information)

There is a missing || true at line 183 in the postinst script. That line should read:

db_get acroread-deu/default-viewer || true

Thank for your report.

Could you please provide the output of
$ DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer sudo dpkg-reconfigure adobereader-deu

thanks.

Here is what it returned
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: adobereader-deu is broken or not fully
installed

The output is as follows, Adrian:

/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: adobereader-deu ist kaputt oder nicht
komplett installiert

Here it is:

ralf@DIMENSION8300:~$ DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer sudo dpkg-reconfigure
adobereader-deu
[sudo] password for ralf:
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: adobereader-deu ist kaputt oder nicht
komplett installiert

It says "adobereader-deu is broken or not installed completely".

In fact, adobe reader is working fine, I didn't experience any failures
till now.

reproduced with adobereader-deu (9.3.1-2) karmic; urgency=low

The name of the template is "acroread/default-viewer" not "acroread-deu/default-viewer"
setting to triage / high because package cannot be installed.

Changing the line like advised in commentary #3 and reinstalling afterwards worked for me.

sudo vi /var/lib/dpkg/info/adobereader-deu.postinst

and installed some random other package afterwards with synaptic, problem gone.

Another quirk was that the package "acroread-fonts" was marked as a conflict when "adobereader-deu" was added.

Some 18 hours ago the "acroread" package was updated to 9.3.2. Please pull this new upstream version to "adobereader-deu" and please add a package for lucid, tx.

A new version of the package (9.3.2-1karmic1) which fix this error has been uploaded few hours ago.
It will be available within the next hours from your local mirror.

I'm setting the status of this report to 'fix released' but don't hesitate to report if it's still an issue with the new version of the package.

Thanks.
