Bug Description

I hand install Windows (Windows 2000 w/ SP4) to two partitions at the front of the drive.
Next install Ubuntu 9.10 behind Windows.
Apply Ubuntu OS updates, install ntfsprogs, reboot

I backup the image of Windows using ntfsclone

I reboot into Windows, and the boot hangs at Mup.sys

This is my first time trying this technique with Windows 2000. Previously I have had great success using ntfsclone to image Windows XP partitions, so thought to do the same with Windows 2000.

I have tried twice. Started over with the VM session. Same results, so I will stop wasting time and wait for a reply.

Attached here is the screen capture of how far the boot gets. Next I will attach a capture of Windows 2000 booting into Safe Mode which shows the last driver attempted to be loaded.

I just recreated this issue using Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2.

I did not even need to use ntfsclone to break the partition... merely added the Windows partitions to my fstab in read/write mode, reboot into Linux, reboot again into Windows and Windows 2000 will no longer boot.

Seems to me that read/write NTFS support and Windows 2000 do NOT play nice together.

How may I assist further?

Updated the description to reflect the more simplistic way which this bug may be recreated.

Again, how may I assist further?

I am working on a broblem found during Lucid alpha testing with the support people at the NTFS-3G project. However, it seems to be turning into a grub2 bug and not ntfs-3g related. Please see the discussion thread here:

"ntfsclone makes Windows 2000 partition not boot after imagin"
http://tuxera.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3334&p=10354&sid=c4e21d3a45c0fdcc64daf90673cd7771

I was going through a test process in order to capture data the support person was asking for. I was able to reproduce the error never mounting the NTFS partition R+W with the ntfs3g driver. The support person hinted that maybe Grub2 is the source of the trouble.

I will try to assign this bug to the grub queue.

Trying to add grub, ntfs3g support seems to think this is caused by grub.

Confirmed today that this problem is unique to Windows 2000 (w/ SP4) and does NOT affect Windows XP Pro w/ SP3.

I just confirmed this problem with Ubuntu 9.10 which also has grub2. Same result.

I think this needs to get escalated to where ever grub2 comes to Ubuntu from, correct? Please advise. Thanks.

I did a recreate using the daily ISO from 20100312. Booting Win2K still seems to hang at the same spot as previously. WinXP gets further into the boot process with the 20100312 build of Ubuntu, Win2K does not get that far.

I re-tested this condition today using the 20100426.1 ISO image of Lucid.

I am please to report that in the test configuration tested, the problem is completely / successfully resolved.

The test was in a VirtualBox VM environment.

I insalled Lucid (Can't find the exact version, but all files on the CD's root are dated 2010-03-02) and I had a problem similar to the one discused here. I also have winXP SP2 installed.

It is not booting any more and I would like to see if there is a way to fix it. Here is what happened:

1.Installed ubuntu and was able to double boot for a good 4 months in which I didn't even mount an NTFS partition.
3. Mounted NTFS partition (the one where windows files are) and made some changes on a text file (a LaTeX document I was working on, no system file or anything)
3. Next time I tried booting into windows, the "loading windows" splash screen appeared for like one second then rebooted back to grub.
4. If I now try to boot windows, it takes me to the windows menu where you choose Safe Mode, etc. No matter what option I pick, it reboots back to grub, this time booting straight into ubuntu (the normal wait period in grub is skipped)

Ubuntu boots just fine.
I can mount the NTFS partition on ubuntu and everything seems just fine.
I just can't boot into windows any more.

Any luck you have any idea on how to be able to boot my windows again? (apart from the obvious reinstall windows then fix grub method)

Thanks

@#12 syats:

Sounds like your problem is different since you stated you had "able to double boot for a good 4 months".

What I was seeing during Lucid testing was Lucid would thrash / trash a working copy of Windows 2000 or XP immediately upon adding Lucid to free space behind the Windows partition(s).

The problems with both Windows 2000 and XP were resolved prior to the release of Ubuntu 10.04 / Lucid.

Sorry.. I tought the problem appeared after mouting the NTFS partition.

I'll keep trying to fix it, and won't use night builds any more for an every-day machine.

Thanks any way :)

rrrr???? Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid is released now.

Perhaps are you testing Ubuntu 10.10? If so, open a new ticket as this one was for Lucid / 10.04.

Yes, its Lucid 10.04.

But as I said, the files on the root of the ISO image are dated 2010-03-02 (prior to the relase on 2010-04-29)
and the README.diskdefines reads: #define DISKNAME Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" - Alpha i386

Thanks

In that case I would verify the md5sum of your disk to the official release version md5sum.

If it is different, then perhaps try zsync to build a new ISO updating the ISO you already have. Example of when I updated/downloaded the official release:

zsync -i ./lucid-desktop-i386_20100426.1.iso http://ubuntu.media.mit.edu/ubuntu-releases/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.zsync

I was renaming dailies I pulled down including the date code in the filename. So rename the one you have, and use it to speed up downloading the official release version. Bye! :-)
