Bug Description

Using a Dell P4 2.8 Ghz, 1g Ram, NVidia GeForce FX5200 (Dell) video card. On Boot up and shutdown the display is scrambled, after bootup and before shutdown the display is correct. I do not have this problem with Ubuntu 5.10.

Are you using special vga= parameters on the kernel command line? Does
removing splash from the kernel command line help?

How do I remove splash from the kernel command? How can I edit vga=
parameters in the kernel command? Are there differences between 5.10 and
6.06 in both of these?

I've got the same problem. The scrambled video is not during the grub menu, it starts when booting the system. I assume the vga settings used during boot confuses my monitor.

My system: CPU AMD K6+/550 MHz, Radeon 7000, 384 MB Ram, 17" LCD.

I upgraded from 5.10 where this type of problem didn't show up.

Any clue how we fix this? My symptoms are exactly the same.

In the GRUB boot menu, I think you have to press e to edit the boot commands, and then choose the kernel line and press e again to edit it. Remove the splash keyword and/or add a vga=xy parameter to your liking, or vga=ask to get a list of the possible parameters xy to use. Then press b to boot.

Same here: in between the grub status message and the gdm login screen, all I get is some white flickering schemes. Same for shutdown, after my desktop background disappears it's only white flickering.

6.06 was alright, the trouble started with the upgrade to 6.10.

It's an old Sony Vaio, PCG-VX71P. lspci says:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 11)

And no, I'm not using any special boot parameters. I installed this system as 5.10 and did the upgrades to 6.06 and 6.10 without touching video settings.

I'm using 6.10 and I am having similar problems. During bootup and shutdown there are times when the screen is scrambled. Also during use within Gnome I'm having a problem where any progress indicators fill in with white (which is the same as the background) and thus I cannot see how far a task has gotten. I have installed 6.10 on my Dell Optiplex GX110 with built in video (detected as an 82810E DC-133 CGC).

I tried adding a vga= setting to the kernel line in the grub configuration file, as recommended above. I put there vga=ask, and on boot I am asked to choose a VESA text mode (80*25, 80*50...). The text mode I choose is used for grub (which was looking alright before, too), but it doesn't change the scrambled display afterwards.

Removing the "splash" setting from the kernel line in the grub config
solves the issue. Naturally, it removes the splash screen, I get the
usual text mode boot log, so it is not really a bug fix.

Thanks for your bug report. The initial bug report reported by Don Clark was reproducible with a Nvidia Geforce FX5200, is it possible to reproduce this bug on latest ubuntu gutsy or hardy alpha release?

Barry DeZonia and Michael Below : According to the graphic cards on which you can reproduce that bug, you experience the same bug as bug 68012. I suggest that you subscribe to these bug reports and that you look at the bug description for potential workaround.

Thanks for all the time you spent to improve that bug report so far.

Don Clark : This bug did not have activity during a long period of time so I set the status to invalid, however if you can still reproduce it on latest Hardy release and that you can provide more information about it, please set back the status of the bug to "new" and/or comment here about it. Thanks for the information you provided so far.
