Same here: in between the grub status message and the gdm login screen, all I get is some white flickering schemes. Same for shutdown, after my desktop background disappears it's only white flickering.

6.06 was alright, the trouble started with the upgrade to 6.10.

It's an old Sony Vaio, PCG-VX71P. lspci says:
