It also occurs with the AMD64 bit edition running Ubuntu 9.04

Further information was realised, today when the same event took place. Where vlc just closed out, the difference was this time around it was after I paused a shoutcast stream the program crashed out. So it may have something to do with streaming, but far as it goes this is the only updates thus far.

Anyone else dealing with this?

This seems to be a bug in Qt, that is affecting menu actions of all kinds of apps.

I was trying to get SystemSettings to work on Kubuntu 9.04 upgraded from 8.04.

SystemSettings just causes HD to run continuously for many minutes. SS does not ever load.

Seems fixed for me with the Qt 4.5.1 packages from the kubuntu-experimental PPA, the Klipper crash was 100% reproducible before the upgrade and now it's gone. (https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-experimental/+archive/ppa , remember to add the sources for jaunty not karmic)

Would it be possible to release Qt 4.5.1 into Jaunty proposed as a SRU? It is a bug fix release, so the chance of a regression seems low enough, and given the high number of dupes, it would help a lot.

Qt 4.5.1 does break the version of Amarok shipped with Kubuntu by default; the center pane starts to throw a fit. (fixed in 2.1, but we can't SRU that either.), So while we'd love to SRU this (it fixes quite a few bugs), it just isn't possible given the regressions involved and the amount of apps at risk for potential regression. It will probably be possible to eventually backport 4.5.1 given enough testing, though.

Qt 4.5.1 from kubuntu-experimental breaks Plasma compatibility with KDE 4.2.x - it's visible for example in RSSNow, so it's not a good proposition for SRU. I've get some information from upstream that Qt 4.5.1 has some fixes but it has few known regressions since 4.5.0 but it's been fixed in next version (shipped with KDE 4.3). KDE team does not recommend or support mixing Qt 4.5.x with KDE 4.2.x so the fixes should be imported very carefully.
