I have the same problem - Lenovo Y530 with Dual-Core Intel Centrino and Ubuntu 9.10

8.10 worked fine, and 9.04 did too. After installing 9.10 it started getting flaky - would be fine for a little while then it would freeze up. After rebooting, it would go into a never-ending reboot cycle.

Sometimes it would reboot right after I made a boot selection in GRUB. Sometimes it would reboot before the login screen would appear. Sometimes it would reboot after the login screed appeared and I logged in, but before the desktop would appear.

I have run memtest (or memcheck86+ or whatever it is) - both by pressing "F2" on bootup and the one installed with Ubuntu (presumably - not sure if there's a difference). Memtest never found anything wrong.

I also though maybe it was a hard drive problem so I just installed a new 7200 RPM 360GB Hitachi, installed 9.10 and the same thing happens. Except now I'm lucky if I make it to the glowing white Ubuntu icon. Most of the time it dies right after I make a selection in GRUB.

I have tried the "recovery mode" option in GRUB. I see a lot of text scroll past the screen and then it goes black - just before the computer reboots.

I'm currently downloading 10.04 to see what happens...maybe it doesn't suffer from the same issue?

I'll post here again with my results this afternoon.

Best,
Drago

P.S. - To all the Ubuntu/Debian hackers out there - THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

I have since been able to work around this issue without having to move to the development lucid lynx distro. Instead, I found a 2.6.32 kernel build in this ppa repository for karmic:
https://launchpad.net/~apw/+archive/green

I added this ppa to my sources list and apt-get installed linux-image. Since upgrading the kernel, I no longer get this corrupted low memory error and my laptop appears to be stable again.

I've never tried the 2.6.32 kernel with Jaunty. I never had any issues with the stock kernel included with Jaunty, so I never upgraded it.

The kernel itself appears fine with my hardware. I don't think there would be issues with the newer kernel running on the Jaunty release, but I can't say with certainty as I never tried it.

Hi all - I installed Karmic in November and only now noticed this problem.

My hardware: an IBM ThinkPad R5. (See attached lshw output for more details.)

I haven't identified a specific cause. To trigger the problem, I can start either Armagetron or Chromium, and soon files all over the place become inaccessible.

Initially I thought it was just an ext4 problem, since I was observing filesystem corruption issues (or so I thought). After converting completely to ext3, I still see weird FS issues (it now thinks my 8gb / partition is 16T and 100% full).

Finally I looked to dmesg, which posted the same "low memory corruption" message.

I am also getting this bug on my laptop (Alienware m17x).

This happens to me randomly on boot, and randomly when resumed from suspend.

This happens pretty much very time I pull my power cable out from the back of my laptop (which is where I got the attached dmesg.log file from). Quite often if I pull out the cable from the back of my laptop, I will actually get a kernel panic, but not every time.

Let me know if I can provide any more details.

ubuntu-bug does not complete with a mainline kernel.

What can I add here that would help?

You have not explained why there is any benefit in booting into an old kernel (which does not exhibit this bug) in order to report a duplicate of this bug.

If there is any information that is useful to the resolution of this bug, then please let me know what to post and I will post it here.

Can you please test and report if this works?

memory_corruption_check_size=128K

in the boot options.

The default is

memory_corruption_check_size=64K

but it seems that's not enough for some systems.

Thanks

If you don't know how to set BootOptions read

I have this same issue while booting a 10.10 live cd. Setting the memory_corruption_check_size to 128K allowed the system to boot but it had stability issues (applications were crashing, GUI icons were corrupted). Setting it to 256K appears to be stable, I am currently installing the system and have not run into any problems yet.

I can't paste my whole dmidecode at the moment, but here is some of it:
SMBIOS 2.3 present
vendor: intel
Version:AG91510J.15A.0579.2004.1008.1003
Runtime size: 64k
Rom size: 512k

Had the same problem on an HP ZBook 15u G2 and Ubuntu 14.04 (Linux 3.16.0-31-generic).

Since HP is officially offering this computer with Ubuntu preinstalled, I imagine that they are going to fix this with a future BIOS update (the notebook just got newly introduces).

For now passing memory_corruption_check_size=128K appears to avoid the issue. Thanks @nutznboltz for the tip!
