Comment 17 for bug 324894

I have since been able to work around this issue without having to move to the development lucid lynx distro. Instead, I found a 2.6.32 kernel build in this ppa repository for karmic:
https://launchpad.net/~apw/+archive/green

I added this ppa to my sources list and apt-get installed linux-image. Since upgrading the kernel, I no longer get this corrupted low memory error and my laptop appears to be stable again.
