Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.10;
On my Packard Bell Easy Note laptop one single press of "Fn + Volume up (F4 key)" (or "Fn + Volume down (F3 key)") sends Voume level respectively to the maximum or minimum, no way to change choice after first pressing of the key combination. Pressing any key on the keyboard doesn't sort any effect, can't even write on already opened applications, menus on the status bar become unavailable, need to log out with ctrl+alt+del or (reboot with ctrl+alt+backspace) only keyboard combinations which sort any effect. After re-logging in, keyboard available again, volume set to max or min (depends on what pressed before logging out). Nothing changed in the past 3 days even after the vaious updates. On the same machine with Ubuntu 7.04 volume key combination worked without any problem, with the possibility to change the volume level "step by step".

I can confirm this bug on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo PA1510 laptop.
Whenever pressing Fn+F5 or Fn+F6 for changing volume, the system freezes as described by almatt.
I checked the keybindings and they are ok (XF86AudioRaiseVolume and XF86AudioLowerVolume). Also checked /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/volume_step in gconf-editor. Set to 6.
However, when I change the hotkeys (eg to Ctrl+Alt+PageUp for raising the volume), it works perfectly well.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in xserver-xorg-input-keyboard.

Actually this is more likely to be a kernel problem, but filing against hal-info for further troubleshooting.

A lot of hotkey issues have been worked out in Jaunty. Can you please test against a fully up to date Jaunty and see if the issue can still be reproduced?

Dear Brice,
in the next days I will try to fully update to jaunty. Actually
I'm busy with other stuff and haven't had time to even boot the Packard Bell,
but I will take the time to test this.

This sounds like a similar problem than we already had seen on the Samsung NC10, where the Fn keys send keypress events, but no keyrelease events.

I can confirm this bug on MaxData Eco 4510 IW with Ubuntu 9.10. The Fn + volume up/down keys worked well in 8.04 and lower versions.

Hope that helps.

I have the same issue on a Toshiba Satellite U305-S2812 in fully updated Jaunty. I did not have this issue using 8.04. I can only logout or switch users (shutdown menu will not appear from bar). Then, the system appears fine (log back in OK).

Hi almatt,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 288134

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Upgraded distro to Jaunty, upgraded packages as of today (8th september 2009), tested with lates upstream kernel available (2.6.31.999),but the bug is still not fixed. The behaviour is actually that: Fn + F3/F4 fuly decreases/increases the volume. The volume icon keeps appearing and disappearing, untill I press again F3 or F4, then it stops blinking. I can interact with the mouse (e.g. increase/decrease volume) but no effect with keyboard, with any key combination. Can't shutdown/reboot with the dedicated button on the panel: no window scrolls down. Can reboot only after pressing power button on laptop: the sutdown/reboot window appears and I can select an option with the mouse. I created a launcher with the code "apport-collect -p linux 288134", which I fired after Fn + F3/F4, hope it is of any help.
Cannot actually test on any other release

I'm still having the problem either. I tested with latest upstream kernel and upgraded my distro to the latest version, but the problem persists.
I also tried other distros (latest Debian snapshot and Fedora 11), where I'm _not_ experiencing similar problems.

The bug seems to be present on Lucid.
The description given by , is almost the same that I'm getting on a Olivetti 820 notebook, running lucid from the Live CD. I'll would also add that the upper menu bar freezes, just highligthing the selection but remains non-functional.
The system has a 8.04 installed, with no issues.
Maybe the the bug is xorg related, because I have tested eight different distros, using KDE, Gnome and Xfce and diferent kernel versions: Ubuntu 9.10, Mandriva, Opensuse, Zenwalk, VectorLinux, ScientificLinux, etc.
The only two that are OK for me are 8.04 and Trisquel Pro 2.2.2 i686 Live DVD, both with xorg 1.4.0.90.
I have seen possibly related bugs: 293642, 278781, 311353, 291612 and 288134.

Please inform me if you need further data.
