Bug Description

[Impact]

 * In the past a lack of updated open-vm-tools versions was found fatal
and therefore we agreed to regularly backport those to the latest LTS.
This is backporting the recent version 11.2.5 to Focal/Groovy.

[Test Case]

 * Test open-vm-tools done by VMWare QA Team as agreed for these
   backports.

[Where Problems could occur]

 * This has the usual regression potential of a new version upgrade and
therefore is higher than a usual SRU. But as agreed int he past to
support new (virtual) hardware open-vm-tools shall regularly be
backported. I suggest keeping it somewhat longer in proposed than usual
just to be on the safe side.

 * This time there is one worth to mention as we have to make some
   tradeoff for https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/issues/128
We can only decide between keeping a non-user-fixable issue in the
release OR to cause potential issues after the upgrade for some
specific setups (17-63 interfaces). But the latter case can be
fixed by the user via https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/81054
and therefore we chose that path of the tradeoff.

[Other Info]

 * This is a practice for or quite a while (almost three years now), see:
   - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/open-vm-tools/+bug/1784638

The request back then came from the community and the decision back then was between VMWare and Ubuntu. VMWare QA Team since then does the qualification of these uploads as we (I) don't have a matrix of Host versions for that around.

Also see https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/releases/tag/stable-11.2.5

Under the accepted special SRU cases [1] this qualifies for #2 and #3 of [2].

@Christian,

Per the 11.2.5 ReleaseNotes.md at https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/blob/stable-11.2.5/ReleaseNotes.md, previously reported issues #467 and #468 have been fixed in this release.

As with the 11.2.0 OVT release, this release provides suggested vmtoolsd pam configuration files for major Linux vendors. By default, the generic pam configuration settings will be used by "make install". To select a Linux vendor specific pam configuration, the following line on "./services/vmtoolsd/Makefile"

     $(INSTALL) $(top_srcdir)/pam/generic $(DESTDIR)/$(PAM_PREFIX)/pam.d/vmtoolsd

should be edited - replacing "generic" with "debian".

Thanks John!
The fixes of these issues should allow this to be a sync again.
And Bernd already uploaded 11.2.5 recently.

Thanks for the hint on the pam change, but that already is in 2:11.2.0-1ubuntu1

Triggering a sync ...

The backports to 20.04 and 20.10 are (as usual) done when the current release is frozen or released (to have ~1 bump per 6 months). So I'll add tasks now but it will be a bit until that happens.

Hi Yuhua,
There was no plan-change - just as I mentiond on 18th January, once the current release is frozen or even closer to released I'll do the backports. That means it is planned for March/April

Hi,
As usual we will make this a two step verification.
a) First a general sniff/function test in a PPA (before we pollute -proposed too fast) via a PPA.
b) Then a proper SRU where then VMware will (as usual) do the full verification of the new builds

Now that Hirsute is somewhat final I have prepared builds of 11.2.5 for Focal and Groovy.
Those are available for the (a) checks in this PPA.
 => https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/4493/

@Vmware - could you give the builds in the PPA the usual pre-check and let us know if it looks good so I can start the full SRU-process on it?

Seems you had no time :-/
So I did my own (trivial) sniff tests and for that bit it LGTM.
I think we can move this forward to MP review and a real SRU upload where you can then do the usual agreed full test.

MPs are up here for review:
