Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi asgard2,

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

All the pieces (not just the kernel) to make hybrid graphics work are in Ubuntu 12.10 "Quantal Quetzal". Can you please test with that and report back here?

asgard2, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

Hi,

of course. I downloaded the daily-live "saucy-desktop-amd64.iso 12-Aug-2013 08:16 866M".

He recognizes the screen but it is not working very well.

I used xrandr --auto, the notebook screen is frozen and the external screen is on and has artefacts. The speed was horrible, type a character and it appers some time later.

http://www.xup.in/dl,15961655/IMG_20130812_164914.jpg/

I think he didn't make it to send the full crash report but I saved the crash files.
Should I post the files here? There was a message that they may contain sensitive information, but it was a live CD, there could be nothing sensitive in there, right?

Yes, the screen is connected via HDMI.

According to the screenshot, there was another HDMI-2 und an VGA-2, this is new.

The VGA-2 is also connected, I don't know why, the notebook has no VGA.

I updated and booted the live image, it is the same as before.

The screen is recognized after the second hdmi cable plugin try.

using
xrandr --auto

activates VGA-1, after I saw this http://www0.xup.in/exec/ximg.php?fid=13581600

I deactivated VGA-1 with "xrandr --output VGA-1 --off", the most artefacts are gone.
But it is still slow on dual screen and I can not change to the notebook screen (is is frozen) or the screen is cloned.

asgard2, as a potential WORKAROUND, if you disable the discrete nvidia card in BIOS, would your HDMI work in either Precise or Saucy?

sorry for my late answer

I updated Saucy to kernel 3.11.0.7, if I try to activate the HDMI I recieve:
xrandr: Configure crtc 3 failed.

and the second screen is detected at HDMI-2 now.

It is completely not working anymore with nouveau.

Do you mean a new bug for nvidia-current problem with nvidia-detect "none"?

So, you were in Precise or Saucy itself when you did this test?

>"Do you mean a new bug for nvidia-current problem with nvidia-detect "none"?"

Yes, as nvidia and nouveau are distinctly different drivers, requiring one bug report, per problem, per driver for each to be dealt with efficiently.

asgard2, ok. So to start from the beginning, in Precise if you use Bumblebee, it's not supported by Ubuntu, as it's not in the Precise repository, but a PPA.

With this in mind, your Precise lspci showed your nvidia card wasn't even working, and everything seemed to be flowing through your Intel card (probably due to Bumblebee not working right or you had nvidia card disabled in BIOS).

Despite that, just to clarify on your Saucy test, all you did was have both graphics cards enabled in BIOS, no Bumblebee, and was relying on only nouveau, correct?

As well, if you install the nvidia drivers only in Saucy (no Bumblebee) does your HDMI work for you?

The is no option to disable the discrete nvidia card in the bios.

Ubuntu 13.04 is installed local at the HD and 13.10 at the flash drive.

This is from 13.10, nvidia- current is installed from the repository. The hdmi is not working "xrandr: Configure crtc 3 failed."

asgard2, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, please just make a comment to this.

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.13-rc6-trusty/ and advise to the results?

Bug is still there.
I tested with the latest saucy upgrades and the current stable trusty kernel (3.13.0-031300-generic_3.13.0-031300.20140119).
The screen connected on the hdmi port is not even recognized.

If required I could also try the current daily build.

asgard2, thank you for testing Trusty. For now, I'm going to send this to xorg for review, as this would appear to be an issue there, versus the kernel.

Despite this, regarding the information you provided:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ xrandr --output HDMI-1-1 --auto
Floating point exception (core dumped)

If your OS is not in too bad of a shape, a window should pop open to allow you the opportunity to report a bug. If not, this should populate a crash file in the folder /var/crash , where it is recommended this is copied to your installed OS, and report from there via:
ubuntu-bug NAMEOFCRASHFILE

Just to clarify, in the best scenario from all the xrandr permutations tested, while the external monitor was working via HDMI in Trusty, the FPS was 1-3, and you would have graphics artifacts?

asgard2, the fact HDMI doesn't work at all in Precise through Saucy would be a downstream (Ubuntu) only issue.

However, the issue of low FPS and graphics artifacts in Trusty is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem through the appropriate channel by following the instructions _verbatim_ at http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Bugs/ ?

Please provide a direct URL to your bug report once you have made it so that it may be tracked.

Thank you for your understanding.

I could not get the notebook screen and the external online, notebook is black.

Graphic errors are the same as before.
But I would say, the slow reaction time is maybe not because of fps. For example, the terminal is sometimes very slow, I could type something and it is written a second ago.
Graphics seems to be smooth, but the screen is not refreshing, for ex.
