Despite this, regarding the information you provided:

Floating point exception (core dumped)
If your OS is not in too bad of a shape, a window should pop open to allow you the opportunity to report a bug. If not, this should populate a crash file in the folder /var/crash , where it is recommended this is copied to your installed OS, and report from there via:
ubuntu-bug NAMEOFCRASHFILE
Just to clarify, in the best scenario from all the xrandr permutations tested, while the external monitor was working via HDMI in Trusty, the FPS was 1-3, and you would have graphics artifacts?
