Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu quantal (development branch), since the new 3.5 kernel coming, I can't boot I don't know where is the problem, kernel or ati module, but with 3.4 kernel there is no problem booting the Ubuntu.
When choose the 3.5 kernel from grub menu and start loading, after 10-15 seconds, just freeze, and can't do anything. I tried and mainline kernel from kernel-ppa/mainline but no change, still can't boot.

A Ubuntu kernel version bisect revealed that 3.4.0-5.11 works and the first problematic kernel is 3.5.0-1.1 .

WORKAROUND: 1. edit grub command line to add 'nomodeset' and boot.

2. Then add 'nomodeset' in GRUB2's kernel command line (using GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub) and run 'sudo update-grub'

3. Add the following to /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
modprobe -r radeon
modprobe -r drm
modprobe radeon modeset=1

4. Remove ~/.Xauthority

5. Reboot

WORKAROUND: Use kernel parameter:
nomodeset

However, with nomodeset, 3D don't work correctly, cant use normal unity session, unity 2D session works but with artifacts.

tolostoi, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot ? As well, if you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Now I'm trying to bisect the kernel, but don't understand the whole process well. From the link i read, most important part is to determine which kernel is bad, and which is good. I already know this.

In your case, 3.4.0-5-generic works, but 3.5.0-16-generic does not. However, these two kernels do not immediately follow one another in version number. As per https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/+source/linux we have the following kernels between the two:
3.4.0-5.11
3.5.0-1.1
3.5.0-1.1
3.5.0-2.2
3.5.0-2.2

3.5.0-10.10
3.5.0-11.11
3.5.0-11.11
3.5.0-12.12
3.5.0-12.12

3.5.0-15.23
3.5.0-16.24
3.5.0-16.24
3.5.0-16.25

For example, if you found that the first problematic kernel was 3.5.0-1.1, then the 3.4.0-5 is the last kernel that works, as 3.5.0-1.1 comes immediately after 3.4.0-5, then you could continue following the article.

Thanks for pointing out this policy. I did however want to share my workaround with people who might find this bug. And surely you'll agree that having one's bug report marked as a duplicate feels like it is being thrown away, it's not a good feeling for the reporter; and in this case it is clear that we're dealing with a duplicate.

By the way, I performed the bisection, using quantal kernels from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

3.4.17 (2012-10-31) works, as reported earlier, while 3.5.0-rc1 (2012-06-03) crashes (screen and keyboard frozen, no log files left). Further bisection would require delving into the git history. Newer kernels are also affected, right up to the latest 3.7.0-rc4 (2012-11-04). So the signs point to a problem upstream.

Red Hat users have hit the same issue, and have got further than we in debugging. Timothy Davis narrowed the problem down to changes made in radeon_kms.c between 3.4 and 3.5. Again, we need to send this upstream.

I do not agree. How one feels about a Ubuntu developer/triager marking their bug a duplicate is not a reason to not file a new report. The purpose of filing a new report is not to make you feel bad if it's marked a duplicate of another, but so a Ubuntu developer/triager may analyze the debugging attachments and make the determination if it is in fact a duplicate or not. By not filing a new report, you are preventing Ubuntu developers/triagers from analyzing your hardware.

>"and in this case it is clear that we're dealing with a duplicate."

It is not clear in this case we are dealing with a duplicate. Please see above and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1029790/comments/20 .

While it is appreciated you took the time to investigate this on your hardware, it would be demonstrably more helpful if you filed a new report, as already requested of you in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1029790/comments/20 .

This works for me on HP Compaq nc6400 (radeon mobility x1300) with a vanilla ubuntu 12.10 install:

1. edit grub command line to add 'nomodeset' and boot.

2. Then add 'nomodeset' in GRUB2's kernel command line (using GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub) and run 'sudo update-grub'

3. Add the following to /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
modprobe -r radeon
modprobe -r drm
modprobe radeon modeset=1

4. Remove ~/.Xauthority

5. Reboot

And the problem is solved.

It's not working for me with non vanila kernel. I can see grub's nomodeset is working (because of the shape of Ubuntu's logo) but I get a black screen when lightdm should normally be displayed. Switch to an other VT and back to lightdm display give me lightdm in about 16 colors, and a wrong ratio display.
Something may be wrong with my manipulations?

@Id2ndR:

In step 1 (comment #30), use 'text nomodeset' as options. This will get you into the console mode without troubles.
Then follow the rest of the steps.

The important point is, you must get into console mode and modify rc.local so that radeon driver is *reloaded* with 'nomodeset=1' along with drm module before you go into GUI mode.

It seems, this bug is a related to some race condition (grub<->kernel modules<->X) in boot procedure.

tolostoi, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:

Kernel 3.5.x -> needs nomodeset (12.10)
Kernel 3.8-> needs nomodeset (13.04)

Right now I'm running Kernel 3.2 from 12.04 on 13.04 as a workaround.

Since Ubuntu team is just able to tell us to report that it doesn't work at each single version of the kernel, waiting for upstream to fix the trouble, I put here a workaround (tested on raring) to all those people whose got this 100% reproducible trouble since quantal release.

Add 'nomodeset' in GRUB2's kernel command line (using GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub) and run 'sudo update-grub2'
Put lightdm_delay init script in /etc/init.d/lightdm_delay
sudo chmod 755 /etc/init.d/lightdm_delay
sudo update-rc.d lightdm_delay defaults
sudo reboot

Basically this script just reload radeon module and start lightdm daemon 1 second after.

and the commit is

How to report that to upstreams?
