2012-07-27 07:00:13 Brad Figg linux (Ubuntu): status New Confirmed
2012-07-27 16:41:58 penalvch description I'm using Ubuntu quantal (development branch), since the new 3.5 kernel coming, can't boot without "nomodeset" option. I don't know where is the problem, kernel or ati module, but with 3.4 kernel there is no problem booting the Ubuntu. When choose the 3.5 kernel from grub menu and start loading, after 10-15 seconds, just freeze, and can't do anything. I tried and mainline kernel from kernel-ppa/mainline but no change, still can't boot. With nomodeset, 3D don't work corectly, cant use normal unity session, unity 2D session works but with artefacts. 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express Memory Controller Hub (rev 03) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express PCI Express Root Port (rev 03) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family PCI Express Port 1 (rev 01) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family PCI Express Port 2 (rev 01) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 01) 00:1d.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 01) 00:1d.2 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 01) 00:1d.3 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 01) 00:1d.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 01) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev e1) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 01) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) IDE Controller (rev 01) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) SATA Controller [AHCI mode] (rev 01) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI M52 [Mobility Radeon X1300] 02:06.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Cardbus Controller 02:06.2 Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments 5-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD) 02:06.3 SD Host controller: Texas Instruments PCIxx12 SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller 02:06.4 Communication controller: Texas Instruments PCIxx12 GemCore based SmartCard controller 08:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5753M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 21) 10:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02) tolostoi@HP-Compaq-nc6400-RH484EA-ABB-tstoi:~$ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. 2013-07-17 06:30:04 tolostoi description I'm using Ubuntu quantal (development branch), since the new 3.5 kernel coming, I can't boot I don't know where is the problem, kernel or ati module, but with 3.4 kernel there is no problem booting the Ubuntu. When choose the 3.5 kernel from grub menu and start loading, after 10-15 seconds, just freeze, and can't do anything. I tried and mainline kernel from kernel-ppa/mainline but no change, still can't boot. A Ubuntu kernel version bisect revealed that 3.4.0-5.11 works and the first problematic kernel is 3.5.0-1.1 . WORKAROUND: 1. edit grub command line to add 'nomodeset' and boot. 2. Then add 'nomodeset' in GRUB2's kernel command line (using GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub) and run 'sudo update-grub' 3. Add the following to /etc/rc.d/rc.local: modprobe -r radeon modprobe -r drm modprobe radeon modeset=1 4. Remove ~/.Xauthority 5. Reboot WORKAROUND: Use kernel parameter: nomodeset However, with nomodeset, 3D don't work correctly, cant use normal unity session, unity 2D session works but with artifacts.
