In step 1 (comment #30), use 'text nomodeset' as options. This will get you into the console mode without troubles.
Then follow the rest of the steps.
The important point is, you must get into console mode and modify rc.local so that radeon driver is *reloaded* with 'nomodeset=1' along with drm module before you go into GUI mode.
It seems, this bug is a related to some race condition (grub<->kernel modules<->X) in boot procedure.
