Confirmed this - the wubi.exe gets deleted even before you select the target drive to install to. Then it fails when trying to copy the nonexistent wubi.exe

I just wanted to add that this only happened to me when wubi.exe was run out of the Common Startup folder. I've confirmed that installing with wubi.exe outside of the common startup folder works as normal. So it should only affect the new Ubiquity feature of adding Wubi to the common startup.

Still not good with wubi 11.04 rev210 using the 20110427 iso-testing build, but I realize I may just be a nuisance ATM.

Details in posts #60 thru #62 here:

Major apologies if I am just being a nuisance, but I know almost nothing about Wubi.

Erick, the first install failed because Wubi was still partially installed. You then uninstalled and I think reran Wubi by hand. We speculate that the reason wubi.exe was deleted earlier than we were intending (because we were expecting it only to be scheduled for deletion later) is because of this.

Could you please try uninstalling Wubi in the Windows control panel, *then* rebooting into the Ubuntu installer such that it prompts you to use Wubi, and see if that works?

Not exactly. This AM I first encountered the error:

Exception: Cannot install into C:\ubuntu.
There is another file or directory with this name.
Please remove it before continuing.

I fairly easily located "Ubuntu" in C, it was of zero size so I just deleted it.

Then I rebooted with the Live CD choosing to install inside Windows then removing the disc, pressing enter which causes a reboot, and waiting for the Wubi install dialog to appear on the screen. I then selected 10GB as size, entered my name and password, then this error appeared:

IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Startup\\wubi.exe'

And I thought that appeared to be identical to the error reported when I opened this bug report.

Just looking now and Ubuntu does not appear in the Control Panel under add/remove, but once again there is a 0 byte folder named Ubuntu in C so I deleted it again.

Note: I have not tried performing a standard Wubi install at any point, only by selecting install inside Windows from the ubiquity allocation screen. But bcbc did, at my request, try a standard Wubi install and said it worked OK.

Do you still want me to repeat this?

The full text from %temp% of wubi 11.04 rev210 is here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10726404&postcount=62

You'll notice the time stamp of the first error was 04-26 10:44 and the second error was at 04-26 11:15. I then realized I needed to reset my clock - this box usually resides in my closet.

I just uninstalled first, then copied wubi.exe to the common startup and did
a new install with rev-210. Same problem. You can see the wubi.exe is
deleted already when the screen pops up, before selecting the drive.

This is of course only sensibly testable with a full CD image. We'll be spinning candidates for that shortly, once we get the new Wubi executable signed. If those images fix this problem, then we'll consider them as candidates for the final release; otherwise we'll go with 20110427.

I'm burning the image now and I'll begin testing shortly, but from the initial test I performed when bug 770256 appeared it'll take about an hour or so to totally complete the test.

Of course it only takes a few minutes to boot the Live CD, start the installation, and two screens later you're at the point of truly beginning the reboot/begin Wubi install, but then the automated procedure begins downloading the iso to install rather than offering to use the existing Live CD.

Anyway, it'll take a while. And then I'll need to check for any regressions to other ubiquity options.

Erick Brunzell (lbsolost) wrote :

So far so good. The attached screenshot shows it's now doing it's thing.

Just to be absolutely sure you know what I'm doing:

I booted the Live CD and chose install, then you pass the first two installation screens. On the third screen it offers three options:

Install inside Windows
Replace Windows
Something else

I chose "inside Windows" which resulted in a text screen prompt to remove disc and press enter.

Upon doing so, after Windows loads all of it's garbage................ slowly ................... the Wubi install screen displays where you can change install size or username and enter your password. Then the download and install begins.

Of course the install is not complete until you boot into Ubuntu the first time.

I do think for Oneiric we need to explore the option of adding an option to "Use existing image" to the Wubi install screen that appears upon reboot. I mean why DL an image that's right on the desk in front of you?

Regardless I'll report back when things are truly complete.

My big question is: is there any specific regression I should look for in the many other installation options?

I mean, is there another specific installation option you'd like me to try first after this completes (if successful)?

I don't want to see us cause a bigger problem this late in the game :^)

I can't run the full test unfortunately. I've been downloading the wubi and
copying it to the common startup folder myself. However, I was reproducing
the problem successfully before in this manner.

I just ran the latest and this time it did not delete wubi.exe when I ran
it. It was still in Common Startup after exiting the program (and when I
went to reboot my computer), but when I booted back into Windows it was
gone. So... although it's not a completely valid test, it looks like it is
working now for me.

Success! This works perfectly.

After the DL was complete I was prompted to either reboot now or later, I chose now. Then I chose to boot Windows first. After waiting about 2 minutes for all of the bloat-ware to load all was fine so I rebooted and chose Ubuntu.

Then the true installation began and it worked flawlessly. Upon completion I rebooted several times, trying each Ubuntu or Windows no less than three times, and all is well!

So, if you think these changes are unlikely to cause a regression elsewhere I think we should push another iso-build.

OTOH if there is even a fair chance that this could create a regression elsewhere we'd be better off to address this in the release notes.

Don't leave me hanging ;^)

Thanks! I think we'll go with this, then - there's essentially no chance of regression as far as I know, given that Wubi is working.
