X server fails to start - X850 PCI-E

Bug Description

I tried the Hoary hedgehog version of Ubuntu and it couldn't get my video card to work. When it tries to install it gives me the following message:

"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not setup correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"

I downloaded the flight cd for Dapper Drake and it still gave me the same problem. I would this problem to be fixed by the time the next version comes out since I really like your distribution of Linux.

My videocard is an Ati X850 OEM PCI-Express.

Thanks for your time and for making such a great operating system.

I have the same problem with X850XT and AMD64. When booting the Dapper Drake LiveCD (beta2). Or installing Ubuntu 5.10 using the 'ati' drivers. The 'vesa' driver is my only workaround sofar. The 'fglrx' drivers have the same problem.

I'll try to add the configuration and log later.

I can confirm this bug to exist on Dapper Beta 2, using a X850 CrossFire PCI-E card. I spend all saturday configuring this card (on a friend's computer) without any result.

After a default install (using the install iso) I get the error "No devices found" immidiately after GDM is run. I tried to install 'fglrx' (instead of 'ati') by both methods found on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI, so by using Ubuntu's own driver and ATI's official driver. I ended up with an error about 3 other devices PCI:1:0:1, 2:0:0, 2:0:1 being unconfigured using ATI's driver. Ubuntu's driver made every crash, had to press the reset button.

The 'ati' and 'vesa' Xorg drivers also didn't work. Black screen every time. I will ask for the configuration files and submit them here as soon as possible.

I have an ABITX700PRO PCI-E video card and AMD64 3000+. If I install 64bit version of Ubuntu Dapper Drake I get the same message. When I change the driver "ati" to "vesa" in the xorg.conf file and reboot the system I get blank screen. I tried to download the fglrx driver from the ubuntu mirror but it doesn't work. If I install the i386 version of Ubuntu Dapper Drake and I change from ati to vesa, my system is working. After this I download the fglrx driver from Ubuntu mirror my system is working with the driver but no 3D. My system is working with 3D when I install the fglrx driver with easy-ubuntu. I has the same problem with the Breezy i386 version too.

I have a X800 PCI-E card and can't get X to work with Dapper on AMD64 using 86_64. Using the the latest Live CD I get an error stating 'No Screens Found' in the Xorg.0.log and if I try to use the vesa driver I get a blank screen and then my monitor goes to sleep. I also tried to do a dist-upgrade from my Breezy install which had a working X configuration using the vesa driver and the same issues occur.

I will attach my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log that show me trying to use the ATI driver.

A workaround I used after I was dropped to the shell was to install xorg-driver-fglrx and update xorg.conf to use the fglrx driver, then telinit 1 followed by telinit 2 to start the install again. This should allow you to install using the GUI, but you'll need to install the fglrx driver again after you reboot.

I have the same(?) bug with ATI Mobility Radeon x700

GDM fails to start after install and in live CD, this problem has been the same in 5.10 and all dapper flights & betas.

Workaround is installing xorg-driver-fglrx and changing *only* driver from ati to fglrx in xorg.conf, then restarting gdm with "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart". All other xorg settings are correct, including screen size (1280x800).

I've found some problems in the "atiprobe"-part of the ati driver. It's often fixed by choosing radeon as the driver in xorg.conf instead of ati... "ati" is a wrapper that should point to the radeon driver if you have any recent ATI card, but it fails to do so with my card too. I also found out you need to specify MonitorLayout option by hand if you're using DVI connector.

I'm using a X800 PCI-E card. See https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6796 for my findings. Currently working just fine with the open source driver (2D only at the moment, maybe DRI/3D support not enabled in dapper by default?) with the "radeon" and "MonitorLayout" specified.

Problem still exists in Edgy beta + updates, on X800 GTO and X800 Pro, PCI-Express versions. Only the "blue screen" of an X error is gotten when trying to eg. boot from a desktop CD, or after installation.

same problem here

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

[A64 3500+, 1gb Ram, X850XT pci-e, Audigy2]

excuse my limited unix knowledge.

I got me the ubuntu 6.06.1 64bit and burnt it on CD.

Upon booting off CD it aborts because it fails to start the X server.
I get thrown right into a shell, no login.

I was looking thru the xorg0.log

I see my radeon x850xt listed with the right busID as primary device.

But at the end of the logfile it says

"PCI Radeon Mach64 on bus 5.0.0 not found !"
"PCI Radeon Mach64 on bus 5.0.1 not found !"

(EE) no device found !!

Needless to say i dont own (never had) a Radeon Mach64.

This is trying to boot off the live-CD "as burnt" from the *.iso

My old Radeon 9800 Pro had a partial memory meltdown recently so I replaced it with an X850 AGP card. My system will now only boot up in 648 x 480 mode and when I check the Xorg log, it says that all of the video modes are invalid due to hsync being out of range.

I tried the Dapper livecd ( both and64 and i386 ) and they just lock up completely when loading X.
