A workaround I used after I was dropped to the shell was to install xorg-driver-fglrx and update xorg.conf to use the fglrx driver, then telinit 1 followed by telinit 2 to start the install again. This should allow you to install using the GUI, but you'll need to install the fglrx driver again after you reboot.
