This was in the terminal only. No dots or stars were registered. It was like the keypad was on lock, but it wasn't.

Then I'm not sure, because this should work, could you please clearify:
1. Does this happen with all installations (including software center/synaptic/etc), or only installations through the terminal?
2. When typing your password in the terminal it will not show any stars or dots, however it should be registered. So just typing the password and pressing enter as usual should work. Could you please double-check whether this works or not?
