This was in the terminal only. No dots or stars were registered. It was like the keypad was on lock, but it wasn't.

Then I'm not sure, because this should work, could you please clearify:
1. Does this happen with all installations (including software center/synaptic/etc), or only installations through the terminal?
2. When typing your password in the terminal it will not show any stars or dots, however it should be registered. So just typing the password and pressing enter as usual should work. Could you please double-check whether this works or not?

Status in “terminal” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  running command
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade

  when command recognised prompted to type user password. Unable to type
  this (no key on the keyboard registers) therefore [sudo] password for
  user's machine not entered and unable to complete an install.

  using Ubuntu 11.04
  unable to locate package pkgname
  expectation: password entry accepted and continuation of installation process
  what happened: keyboard keys didn't register as entries when prompted for password
