when command recognised prompted to type user password. Unable to type this (no key on the keyboard registers) therefore [sudo] password for user's machine not entered and unable to complete an install.

using Ubuntu 11.04
unable to locate package pkgname
expectation: password entry accepted and continuation of installation process
what happened: keyboard keys didn't register as entries when prompted for password

The password is not shown, in order to prevent others from looking over your shoulder and seeing your password. Just type it out as normal and press enter at the end. For more info, please see https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+faq/62 .

The password was not entered in at all due to the keyboard keys not working when prompted to type password. This happened on all installations requiring password confirmation in Ubuntu 11.04

Then I'm not sure, because this should work, could you please clearify:
1. Does this happen with all installations (including software center/synaptic/etc), or only installations through the terminal?
2. When typing your password in the terminal it will not show any stars or dots, however it should be registered. So just typing the password and pressing enter as usual should work. Could you please double-check whether this works or not?

This was in the terminal only. No dots or stars were registered. It was like the keypad was on lock, but it wasn't.

It would also be possible to add this PPA through Software Sources in the Software Center. Open Software Sources and add the PPA (ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports) to Other Software. Once this has been added you should be able to install or upgrade the packages offered by the PPA as normal.

See also http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/how-to-add-a-ppa-to-software-sources-in-ubuntu/ which explains the process in detail, with screenshots. Hope this helps.
