Bug Description

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302931#c154

I don't know exactly what's going on, but the bug seems to not be in KDE: "is this by accident that i see only ubuntu reports?"

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04
Package: plasma-desktop 4:4.10.5-0ubuntu0.1
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.8.0-26.38-generic 3.8.13.2
Uname: Linux 3.8.0-26-generic i686
ApportVersion: 2.9.2-0ubuntu8.3
Architecture: i386
Date: Fri Jul 12 10:08:09 2013
MarkForUpload: True
SourcePackage: kde-workspace
UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to raring on 2013-05-07 (66 days ago)

[Impact]
Causes plasma-desktop to randomly crash for time in time with some hardware configurations.

[Test Case]
If you've experienced crashes try the updated version for a few days and see if the crashes are gone.

[Regression Potential]
The patch has already been removed 3 months ago in saucy with no regression reports.
The underlying bug was fixed in 4.8.4 and this patch reverts parts of that.

AFter I reproduced the bug for the seventh time or so, plasma-desktop did not restart automatically. After I started it manually, I could not reproduce the bug anymore. If this crash is random then maybe it's related that this is on a 'fast' computer (i7/ssd).

Good news:

According to https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-devel/2014-January/007856.html there will be backports of Qt 4.8.5 available for 13.10 and 12.04 LTS releases in experimental PPA repositories.

Please test these as good as possible. If they do not fix this crash, please add a comment. If they introduce other regressions, please report them to Launchpad. In case there are no issues, there are chances for a general backport later.

What's the state of this bug? Was the fix in 4.8.5 backported to standard (non experimental) repositories? I don't think so, since I'm using Linux Mint 16 KDE and I still have QT 4.8.4. However, I see reports from people using QT 4.8.6, so how is it possible?
