Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

I'm tunning Ubuntu Intrepid
I have a Canon iP4500 printer connected to my Windows XP Desktop installation. It is shared by smb:// over the network.
I added the printer using the dialog System > Administration > Printing and I added all the properties (including credentials for the network share).
If I try to print, everything goes well. However, if I enable duplex printing, a message will appear on the Windows computer: "Not possible to print in duplex because this paper size is not supported" (I translated this sentence from Dutch.) On my Linux laptop and WIndows computer, the paper size is set to A4.

CUPS does know this and just thinks the page is correctly printed.
I can correctly print from Windows over the network.

I know I have to supply more info, but I don't know what info. Please tell me which logs you need.

I have exactly the same problem with the same printer on lucid. Which means the problem lingers on later releases.

I have the same problem. I'm new to Linux. Installed Mint 13.
Setup my printer which is across the network on my Windows XP Pc.
I'm using a canon ip4300 printer.

I can print fine without duplex.

However when I try to print duplex I get the same error about paper size not being supported (in English). Even though A4 paper and A4 print settings are selected. This message appears on the Windows XP PC, and Linux thinks the printing has gone through fine.
I can print duplex across the network on the same set-up when I use windows 7 which I am hoping to phase out. However, these little problems make me think twice.

Please help.

You tell that you can print if the server is the newer Windows 7 and you get an error on the Windows box if it is the older Windows XP. Looks like that something got fixed in Windows.

If you need Windows for something, you should perhasp use the newer Windows 7. Or you connect the printer to a non-Windows machine and share it out with CUPS/IPP or Samba/SMB so that the Windows machine has access.

Have you already tried to connect the printer directly to a Linux machine? Or to the USB port of a router or of a NAS?

Looks like a bug in Windows. Closing.

No. I think you've slightly misunderstood.
The printer is connected to a windows XP pc.

When I print from across the network duplex works fine when a job is sent from a windows vista PC and a windows 7 PC having tested both.
However, when a job is sent from linux it doesn't duplex even when the duplex options are chosen.
I also tried the new google cloud printing service. The same problem occurs and it doesn't duplex.

Therefore, it seems that the printer happily accepts duplex signals from across the network from other windows PCs but doesn't from anything else.
