Bug Description

Followup from bug 1718824 and bug 1745765 respectively as reported in the other bugs neither front (headphones) nor back (line-out) jack is working after the updates.
A Workaround manually adding the profile for pulseaudio might have been persistet from changes before the upgrade / updates.

pactl is listed in the other bug, alsa-info should be automatically attached.

There haven't been any updates to pulseaudio in bionic. So do you mean it regressed a while ago in an artful update?

Do you know the last version in which it was working?

And Please do a test:

backup the file /lib/udev/rules.d/90-pulseaudio.rules, then edit 90-pulseaudio.rules, find the line "ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bda", ATTRS{idProduct}=="4014", ENV{PULSE_PROFILE_SET}="dell-dock-tb16-usb-audio.conf"", and comment it by adding a # ahead the line, reboot and redo the test.

@Hui Wang
No change - copying the file in the same dir adding .bak is sufficient right- or will this be read as a 2nd conf?

+ iirc this is the line i had to add with the workaround - is there a way to ensure that both the 90-pulseaudio.rules as well as the "dell-dock-tb16-usb-audio.conf" match the vanilla ones from upstream?

@Daniel - Could have been the upgrade to bionic ... Something within the last month if not weeks

adding .bak is ok, after reboot, you can run pactl list cards to verify if the change takes effect or not.
Before change:
       Profiles:
output:analog-stereo-speaker: Speaker (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 60, available: yes)
output:analog-stereo-headphone+input:analog-stereo-mic: Headset (sinks: 1, sources: 1, priority: 80, available: yes)
off: Off (sinks: 0, sources: 0, priority: 0, available: yes)

After change, the 1st two profiles disappear.

If the change takes effect, but it still can't work, I think it is not a pulseaudio issue, probably the firmware issue of dock or kernel driver issue.

And you can verify by these commands:

aplay -D plughw:CARD=xxx,DEV=0 test.wav (replace xxx with the name of usb audio card, aplay -L to check the name of usb audio card)
aplay -D plughw:CARD=xxx,DEV=1 test.wav

And BTW, what does "the vanilla ones from upstream" mean?

Hi there, i've actually even deleted the one line but still the profile shows in pactl list as shown attached.

Also i've tried various variations of aplay -D plughw:CARD=USB Audio test.wav
and
aplay -D plughw:CARD=alsa_card.usb-Generic_USB_Audio_200901010001-00,DEV=0 test.wav

but didn't do anything only
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1713:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card
aplay: main:788: audio open error: No such device

==
With vanilla i meant the version which should be installed on the system without me messing around with it e.g. compared to a fresh install

Probably you forgot to delete 91-pulseaudio.rules? Or rename all dell-dock-*.conf in the folder of /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/profile-sets/.

And for aplay problem, try with "aplay -D plughw:CARD=Audio,DEV=0 test.wav" and "aplay -D plughw:CARD=Audio,DEV=1 test.wav"
If it fails, please upload the log of "aplay -L"

And got what the vanilla means. thx.

I've renamed both profiles and pavucontrol doesn't show the dock anymore.
aplay runs just fine, however not any of the both devices (front or back jack) play the sound

A big sorry from my side ... i totally forgot that i did also boot into Windows during the last months at least once ... looks like windows update or something similar broke the device, installing updates in that other system and rebooting to ubuntu did the trick.
I had to reenable the profiles again in order to get it fully working but now it runs smooth as before :) - only tested the front port though :)
