npviewer.bin related...
After updating to the adobe's non-free flash plugin... Several time I
had the following situation. I could not close a tab (it just freeze
my FF) until I kill the npviewer.bin process....
It directly affects the productivity of ff!!! Negatively!

I can confirm this bug. I am running 7.10 on AMD64 platform. Most of the crashes seemed to occur after upgrading to the latest flashplugin-nonfree 9.0.115.0
Firefox will usually not crash; however, npviewer.bin process will crash and consume 100% cpu on about 50% of flash websites.
This bug makes flash all but unusable on 64-bit Ubuntu platform.

This one is hard to reproduce I find. Does anyone have a website which reliably reproduces this?
If libflashplayer.so or npviewer.bin has a bug we will be reliant on the friendly people who produce this software (woo!! Go freedom!). Unless of course there is a workaround.
eric.rost (eric-rost) wrote : | #9 |
I haven't had a recurrence of this bug in months (since I originally posted
it, I think). I haven't seen something reliably crash the flashplayer. Sorry
guys :)

I've attached a screenshot of the npviewer.bin process windows hanging around on my desktop after a firefox crash. Also, the relevant line from 'top' is:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND

Hope this helps someone track down the bug with npviewer.bin, as it makes firefox all but unusable on 64-bit systems

So the original report is due to a null pointer problem. %edx is zero so (%edx) is sure to cause problems.
Perhaps valgrind is in order, but being a hard to repeat bug..... might be a little annoying.
Anyone want to try:
valgrind --trace-
??
(I have no idea if this will be useful).

It appears there is a potentially fix package for 8.04, but not for 7.10 at the moment.

It coould be a duplicate... the screen turns grayscale while watching

I have Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron - released in April 2008.
npviewer crashes regularly for me right now. It works but is not stable. It appears that if a single page has many flash elements then it will crash. Some of those joke sites with lots of adds will crash it.
I have Ubuntu with proprietary Nvidia drivers I went 8.04 because I have a new nvidia card.

This bug is a bit more severe on laptops. Because it puts continual background strain on processors it leads to very high running temps but otherwise a responsive system. users who are unaware of the problem risk hardware failure or at least decrease lifetime.
For example on my core2 7400 it will cause a proc that runs normally around the 50C mark to sit at 60-70C and sometimes rise to 80C this will cause battery, harddrive and other component to have signf shorter lifetimes.

I don't know if this is the same bug but flash seems to eat a lot of cpu on my computer too, whithout affecting too much the responsiveness of the system, even if the browser window is minimized. I use Hardy on a core 2 duo laptop.

With the latest version of firefox 3 (Hardy repositories) on AMD64 my viewer no longer crashes.
Going to the site mentioned above left npviewer running fine and I could watch the video on there.

It crashed when I closed that tab, thought doesn't do it every time.
I just had all the videos playing on that site and closed the tab and re opened it and closed it again without it crashing.

Yeah, let me give you some details about my system upgrade
I have Xubuntu 7.10 Gutsy amd64 dualcore. I upgraded to all the stable Gutsy
updates. I upgraded Xfce to 4.4.2 via the Xubuntu Team PPA's. Then I decided
to help out the Phatch project, and Upgraded to Ubuntu (not Xubuntu) amd64
dualcore via the Ubuntu 8.04 alternate CD...
It just... offered to do a distribution upgrade, so I let it. I'm having
wierd issues. Immediately after upgrading I got this SIGSEGV npviewer.bin
crash.
Did I go about upgrading incorrectly? I am still a n00b.

Anyone still seeing this crash please report the crash using apport and keep each crash report on a seperate bug report. It seems we have more than one issue on the report and noone obtained a crash report from apport or in /var/crash. We can only handle one crash per bug report.

I've found that as long as flash videos aren't playing when I close their tabs nspluginwrapper doesnt crash.
I think its a bug where the stream is still open when firefox wants to close it but its not exiting properly, pausing or stopping flash videos seems to stop this from happening.

when visiting, moving-away-from and/or closing nytimes.com

This bug is still present on Hardy Heron release with nspluginwrapper 0.9.91.5-2ubuntu2. Importance should be set to high; just look at the giant number of duplicates and subscribers!

While I have FlashBlock (the Firefox addon) enabled, YouTube videos crash, when I open other websites using flash (which are blocked by the addon on the new sites) in new tabs.
I used FlashBlock for a longer time. Since I disabled it a few days ago there were no more crashes (especially "grey screens") of flash or nspluginwrapper. Maybe a lot of crashes on your machine are caused by FlashBlock, too.
Additional Information:
I am using Hardy (8.04) 64 bit (Core 2 Duo) with Firefox 3 Beta 5.

The problem just exists, and it is definitely connected to bad coding in either nviewer wrapper or in flash itself!

I'm also on Hardy 8.04 64-bit (core 2 duo) with firefox 3 beta 5. The crashes with npviewer.bin for me have stopped shortly before Hardy final was released, However, after having many tabs open (with a fair amount with flash embedded pages having been surfed), I do get the embedded "gray box" issue on new pages that I try to load up. Completely closing and restarting the browser fixes it temporarily until many embedded pages have been opened again...
FWIW, I also tried Flash Player 10 beta (http://

Hi all,
about this npviewer bug:
I run hardy x86_64, and I see the same bug when using the wrapper around
acroread. So I have a 64 bit browser and use acroread in it. It is
usable, but after I close a tab with acroread in it, npviewer apparantly
is not closed and starts using 100% cpu in the background.
Well: 100% cpu on one core in my case.
I have to manually kill those npviewer.bin processes all the time.
It definitely is a bug and not fixed yet.
Lars Kumbier (derlars) wrote : Re: [Bug 141613] FlashBlock causes nspluginwrapper crashes too | #93 |
I can confirm the grey-screens in combination with the Adobe Flash
Plugin. I do not use flashblock, but adblock plus.
Did anyone find a way to reproduce the problem with a site or
combination of sites yet?

This bug has seen two different releases now and might see a third. There are reports from the two previous releases and nominations to have them fixed for Intrepid. Why would I start begin a new report after noticing this?

I'm on Intrepid 64... 2.6.27-2. The strange part is... I didn't have this problem on Hardy. Something changed when I ran the dist-upgrade. I am not visiting any sites that I didn't before. The only thing that I can think of is that there definitely was a new version of the flash player installed. I'll try to remember and remove the nonfree flash and test it with the free version and or pin down a specific website. I suspect that it's google calendar but I'm not sure, I'll have to play with my sessions (I have a large number of saved tabs currently and I need to organize them before closing them).

Well, that's not really a fix. You're replacing the problem software with a completely different piece of software, that doesn't even use nspluginwrapper. As well, the free flash plugin isn't compatible with all sites, so it's not a good replacement option.
So I'd say this is a possible workaround, but not really a fix for the bug.

@Eric:
Be respectful. (from conduct rules page)
The Ubuntu community and its members treat one another with respect.
Everyone can make a valuable contribution to Ubuntu. We may not always
agree, but disagreement is no excuse for poor behaviour and poor
manners. We might all experience some frustration now and then, but we
cannot allow that frustration to turn into a personal attack. It's
important to remember that a community where people feel uncomfortable
or threatened is not a productive one. We expect members of the Ubuntu
community to be respectful when dealing with other contributors as
well as with people outside the Ubuntu project, and with users of
Ubuntu.
I agree with that part about forbidding access; it's just annoying,
but necessary because apport sometimes attach sensitive data to
automated reports (which is wrong, but people tend to do the easy
way...).
If you didn't notice yet, you're subscribed to every duplicated bug,
as I am. In my case:
"You received this bug notification because you are a direct
subscriber of the bug (via bug 141613)."
Hope I did clear your doubts. Have a nice day.

Confirmed for me. It's working so far nicely. The coolest things about
this beta plugin are:
* You can open two or even more youtube videos at same time and don't
notice those annoying gray boxes;
* Less comsumption of cpu resources (mem and cycles).
Many thanks about the good news!

If you are referring to the Adobe Flash 64bit, it is still only in alpha
version.
Only way to use it right now is to unistall whatever Flash you have
installed now and put
the new 64bit Flash in your Firefox plug-ins. (from what I have read it
is not working for all browsers
yet.

Just to let you all know, that very same plugin works flawlessly under
Opera 9.6x 64-bit browser as well.
The only thing what has to be done is linking statically to that
Adobe Flash plugin. For me with Kubuntu 8.10 it worked out in the
following manner:
cd /usr/lib/
ln -s /usr/lib/
It works like charm. You should make sure though that nspluginwrapper
is removed.
With both browsers you can confirm that you are using Adobe's Flash
plugin by typing in the new tab/window:
Cheers,

I just modified the latest flashplugin-nonfree package from intrepid to install the 64-bit alpha instead of the stable version of flash, and uploaded the resulting package to my webspace. Interested users can use it to install the 64-bit alpha without getting their hands dirty.
Run the following to obtain the source package:

I am also having regular crashes while using the 64-bit alpha Adobe Flash Plugin. Browser generally doesn't stay up for more than a minute or two. Didn't get much in the way of helpful output upon the crash (the IcedTea message was well before the segfault):

No apport, and not a peep in /var/log/ (no cry for help).
This definitely looks encouraging though, I'm very happy to see Adobe has decided to dabble in a bit of 21st century technology. And if it's working out of the gate for most of the previous commenters, I believe I should be able to get it to work too. I'm going to try to narrow down why I'm crashing, including starting from a clean FF install.

It should be noted that, before you install the 64-bit alpha driver,
you should first completely remove the flashplugin-nonfree and
nspluginwrapper packages from your computer. There's an article which
describes the procedure here:

Although really, we should try to limit the discussions here to the
npviewer.bin bug.

I noticed that Adobe has updated the 64-bit flash alpha, so I've put a new version of the flashplugin-nonfree package at:
http://
source package at:
dget http://
flashplugin-nonfree 10.0.15.3ubuntu1 for Jaunty is now the 64-bit version, so there should be no need for third-party flash packages. Bug 310061 is the Intrepid backport request.
Using the 64-bit plugin is not a fix for the nspluginwrapper bug, but will instead allow flash users to avoid nspluginwrapper entirely.

Obviously it's not a fix for any bug in nspluginwrapper, but since the
bug thread contained discussion about the 64-bit alpha, I posted a
link here. I assumed that the Jaunty version[1] used the 32-bit flash
plugin still, because the version remained the same. I would think it
makes more sense to have two packages with their own versions, to
avoid versioning confusion. Users interested in 64-bit flash should
get it from Jaunty, to ensure that their flashplugin-nonfree package
will be updated when they upgrade to jaunty.
Actually, the best deb to use for Intrepid users is the backport candidate at bug 310061. This is actively undergoing testing, and feedback on different architectures and DEs is appreciated in that report.
The reason for the version confusion is that the 32-bit version remains the same, while the new 64-bit version is different. This is mentioned in the changelog, and I think it's the best we can do while having two different versions in the same package.
Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote : | #179 |
The symptoms reported in the original poster's description should be resolved in jaunty's nspluginwrapper. It would be immensely helpful if people could verify via an alpha 2 desktop vm.

Danny Wood (danwood76) wrote : | #189 |
This crash is caused by flash.
If you install the 64-bit version of flash (very new and still in alpha testing) this crash goes away.
You also need to remove nsplugginwrapper and the previous version of flash otherwise it still loads and crashes even though you are using the 64-bit version of flash.
nullack (nullack) wrote : | #190 |
Dan that is not my experience on 64 bit 10.0.15.3, The 64bit revision will still segfault. With the 64bit flash install, jaunty still gives the user 32bit libs as per the changes Alexander Slack made.
Danny Wood (danwood76) wrote : | #191 |
You dont quite understand me.
The latest release of flash doesnt support 64-bit, and the ubuntu repos will reflect this.
If you remove the flash plugin and nsplugin wrapper through synaptic and install the alpha version of 64 bit flash from adobe labs:
http://
then you will have working flash with no crashes.
I haven't had a firefox/nsplugin crash since I installed the plugin and it works perfectly with everything I view from the bbc to youtube.
The 64 bit flash plugin wont make it into the main repos until it becomes public and is released by adobe.
I think I posted this earlier in this bug report so sorry for re posting!

If you are running the Adobe Alpha 64 bit Flash Player then make sure you
have removed the 32bit flashplugin-nonfree package and or disabled the

It's a temorary workaround.

For me, everything was and is working fine.
I've encountred this problem two times, the first time, all i had to do
is to upgrade the flashplayer-plugin to the latest version released on
2009-02-24.
And now, i've this same problem because i've upgraded FireFox and kept the same flashplugin-nonfree version.
I'm not an expert in linux and ubuntu, but i think that this problem
can be solved if you find two compatible version of firefox and

- before upgrading, I had installed the adobe 64 bits beta plugin 10,0,22,87 manually and it worked, without npviewer
- so, I removed the flash paquet in Synaptic : A error occured, see below, but It removed the plugin maybe installed during the upgrade process.
- And now, everything is OK!!!!!
=> So, I hope the future 64 bits ubuntu version will use this 64 beta plugin instead of using npviewer.

It doesn't really bug me, but this error message popping up occasionally does kinda get annoying.

The cleanest way to do this is to use Debian's flashplugin-nonfree package:

I'm sorry but I don't get what you mean by the same problem. The 64 bit

Are you sure you removed the 32 bit flash player before installing the 64

This flash npviewer issue has been bugging me for ages (even moreso since Karmic). It seems the latest 64bit Flash PPA resolves my issues (for a few days now), avoiding the wrapper completely, and providing stability on repeated YouTubing (where I easily tripped on this). I expect similar results for firefox 3.5 version as well (noting my Ubuntu-Tweaked versions below), but have little motivation to downgrade and test more thoroughly.

That's not a fix. That is called a workaround.
The fact is, there are still multiple bug in this 32-in-64 wrapper
thing. Because of the severe problems people were having with this,
choking up their linux workstations, I banned it from the network
altogether. I needed it for acroreader and flash. They do not provide
proper 64-bit versions, or uptodate versions of their product. No
64-bit acroread at all. Okular or evince is good enough as a pdf
reader plugin, and for flash there really is no proper substitute. I
hope some company will give some funding to bring Gnash up to the
level of support that the windows platform enjoys. I lost all faith in
good things coming from Adobe.
No photoshop for linux, no proper flash, no proper pdf reader, let
alone creator.
Still Adobe is an important provider of standards like PDF, flash,
postscript, so I hope that they do get their act together soon.
They are too important for linux indirectly to die. Otherwise I would
not care about them.

This is true, but it's a very acceptable workaround. If you have no
philosophical misgivings about running Adobe Flash, this really is the
way to do it on 64-bit systems.

The fix is to move directly to the 64 bit version, and stop worrying about nspluginwrapper. How did a 32-bit stopgap become the only and blessed solution?

No official non-alpha-quality x64 bit version from the upstream vendor,
maybe? And yes, while it's true you are CURRENTLY able to download it
(even in alpha), that was not the case at the original inception of this
bug.

So does that mean the bug is grandfathered in because it got here
first? In this case, alpha is just a label, and the 64-bit flash
player is much more stable than running 32-bit flash under
nspluginwrapper, according to many users who have commented on this
thread. There doesn't seem to be any reason to keep the 32-bit flash
plugin under nspluginwrapper that makes up for its brokenness.
krutoileshii (krutoileshii) wrote : | #257 |
64bit flash is not the only problem there are still closed-source codecs out there that only exist in a 32 bit form.

This bug applies to nspluginwrapper under Google Chrome too.
I also second using the 64-bit alpha over the 32-bit wrapped version!
More stable, better performance etc.
At least make it available in the repo's as an option! Like with the wine beta that co-existed with the production one.

Back to +2 after my -1 for flash 64 in the repos. We would be better off to have no flash than force an Alpha on AMD64 users. The need for any plug-in unnecessary soon. Adobe is talking with Google about complete integration into Chrome. So this bug discussion could be renedered moot in the near future.
What Adobe is developing may never become a full-fledged 64-bit product. There's no plug-in for Windows or Mac being developed at all presently. Some features aren't even implemented yet.
Don't force an Alpha down my throat. The 64-bit Alpha isn't faster, and it breaks websites, especially ones that stream video. That can't possibly be better for most end-users. At least Hulu and ESPN 3 work now with the 32-bit plug-in and the wrapper. Take those away and, IMHO, you may as well have no plug-in at all.
Let's either fix nspluginwrapper, or tell people we're going to wait to see what Adobe is going to do.
BTW, what's going on with these previous two posts?

I think they should both be in there, so people can choose for
themselves what sort of problems they want to experience. I've never
seen any video websites that don't work with the 64-bit plugin, and no
matter what package is in the repositories, you're not being forced to
run anything.
