Assuming this is the same case as mine, where npviewer locks up, and any flash box turns a lovely grey?
Sorry I can't help, but hopefully all the crash logs in the other bug report will allow someone to do something about this. Kinda a big deal for anyone with a 64bit computer on the internet. Which will soon be most home Ubuntu users.

Sure enough, it hasn't been an issue since I updated to Hardy.

Thank you for checking back.

http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/GruppoPromozione/ProgettoCDUbuntu.

Ciao!

I don't have any problems with (Adobe) flash player in Firefox for amd64
(Ubuntu 8.04).

You must just remove (first) all installed flash plugins and then
install Ubuntu restricted extras

or just open www.youtube.com and plugin flash (Adobe) with Firefox
Browser present.

Well, My ubuntu 8.10 beta, with isoimage AMD64 labeled and installed by default, installed on my computer with AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+.

Resently Adobe released flashplay 10, and 8.10 beta is installed quite closed to the day Adobe released it, I think there was flashplay 10 beta installed in my system, not flashplay 9. Maybe there is something not so smoothly while flashplay 10 is playing, that npviewer locks up.

Adobe flashplay is released with label 32bit, and my system is 64bit kernel, something wrong with libs ?

Sean McLean (smclean-gmail) wrote :

I just built nspluginwrapper 1.1.2-0ubuntu1 completely vanilla *except* I commented out the 006_runtime-restart.diff patch, and I've found flash to be much more robust without it; I am no longer required to restart firefox when flash fails. Sometimes, I have to reload the page but that's it. I think this may solve or at least mitigate at lot of the problems people have been having with nspluginwrapper on amd64 ubuntu.

My reasoning for doing this was as follows:

I had these same "gray box" flash problems accompanied by npviewer.bin segfaults in dmesg on hardy. After them, I always had to restart firefox in order to get flash working again.

Someone on another bug pointed out that nspluginwrapper 1.1.x upstream is designed to "survive" these segfaults. I decided to download the vanilla nspluginwrapper 1.1.x from upstream and try it out. As I'd heard, I still experienced the npviewer.bin segfaults in dmesg, but I wasn't required to restart firefox in order to get flash to work after it (reloading pages did not help).

Then intrepid came out, and I saw that ubuntu had moved to nspluginwrapper 1.1.2. Excited, I tried this, only to find the same sort of behavior; flash failing and requiring a firefox restart in order to be fixed.

I watched firefox's stdout/stderr during its execution and I saw that the last message from flash I'd see before firefox required a restart was "ERROR: NPObject %p is not valid!". Curious, I checked the nspluginwrapper source to see where this was defined, and I saw that this message was introduced by 006_runtime-restart.diff.

I commented this patch in debian/patches/series and built/installed a .deb. Then I re-installed flashplugin-nonfree to force nspluginwrapper to re-wrap the plugin. Afterwards, as I began my message, my firefox flash has been behaving much better. When I see segfaults in dmesg, and flash fails to work properly on a page, I can reload and it works just fine every time.

I see that this patch was pulled in from the fedora project, where it originally was written for pre-1.x nspluginwrapper. Is this patch still valid? All I know is I've *always* had problems with nspluginwrapper's that have had this patch applied. From the name and contents of it, it appears that this patch is designed to restart the plugin viewer when it crashes. I believe nspluginwrapper provides this functionality itself now, and the patch is no longer required. Am I wrong?

The 64bit-version is why I fully switched to Ubuntu, but the
Flashplayer-problem is/was very annoying as I am working on several
websites which use Flash-videos.
I'm now back to 32bit on an older computer as the 64bit-machine died.
It feels a little bit "quicker" (smoother) for me, don't know why. But
maybe it's just because I know the computer is slower?

I am also back to 32bit on an old computer but this is because the
64bit-machine died. As I have the same surfing-habit as I had on the
faster, better equipped machine I can say: No problems on 32bit side,
no more "stuck" videos or jerking when refreshing the buffer (less
RAM, slower CPU, 8 MB graphic card instead of 256).

afaik I only was able to compile it on Gentoo (I'm a former / part-time gentoo user) without the -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE, ssp and pie setting,

so if you have that enabled or ssp / stack smashing protection, try offering an version which got compiled with less security (e.g. vanilla compiler),

that might sound/be counterintuitive but at least in that way it almost never crashed for me

I found a strange work around for this. On the Adobe website, they state that they have beta support for 64 bit linux for Flash 10. I downloaded and installed. When testing, I found my browser was still using Flash 9 with the nsplugin wrapper. The about:plugins page showed both versions running. I removed all the symlinks pointing to the nsplugin wrapper and created equivalent symlinks to the native Flash 10 library (NOT wrapped), and reloaded my browser. To my astonishment, it worked! The Adobe test page confirmed the new version of flash, as well as about:plugins and a site that required Flash 10. It looks like Adobe may have finally gotten off their butts and acknowledged 64 bit linux. Now, if only Sun would do this with the Java plugin. I've lost count of how many years we've waited on that.

You're results may vary, but maybe if a few others can confirm, it might be time for a Medibuntu package for 64 bit non-free Flash with NO nsplugin wrapper. Be prepared to rollback with Flash 9 and the nsplugin wrapper in case it doesn't work for you.

@Chuck Renner the last versions of sun java (jdk & jre 6b12) finally
support the java-plugin for 64 bits architecture. You should eithr
dowload them from the sun website,or,even easier, you could find them
packaged in some ubuntu's ppa

Chuck,

Sorry to give you the bad news, but your discovery is old news. Both Adobe
and Sun have released native 64 bit plugins that work with Jaunty (not
tested on other platforms, but don't see any reason why they would not
work).

Do some googling. A helpful poster has put some random links a few posts
above but they all seem to be 403 forbidden at this stage.

Essentially I have been running Flash 10 Alpha 64 bit and Sun Java 64 bit in
my 64 bit firefox browser on my 64 bit OS for quite some time :) So just
look around and you will find that the instructions are provided on quite a
few sites.

If you get really stuck, email me off list and I'll tell you how to do it.

Cheers
Blake
