Bug Description

If I start my Dell Vostro 3700 in 10.10 without Power AC adapter Ubuntu crashes after a shot while (max 2minutes).

Ubuntu does not crash, if WLAN is switched off or is not present.
If I have a connection over LAN it does not crash, too.
It crash, if I use my SmartPhone as modem.

This does not happen with a 10.04.1 Live CD.

It does not crash in Windows.

WORKAROUND: Install the package "laptop-mode-tools". The packages acpi-support and pm-utils will be removed. Open file:
/etc/default/acpi-support

write or copy the following lines at the end:
# Switch to laptop-mode on battery power - off by default as it causes odd
# Hangs on some machines
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE = true

Then change the Laptop-Mode on Battery in:
/etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf

to 1:
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_BATTERY = 1

Restart the computer and it should work.

Hello Vostro 3700 - Users and specially Christian,

It's really unpossible to work with this bug. After a long search I have found a workaround that works at least for me. But attention: You are loosing the suspend and hybernate-functions.
Install the package "laptop-mode-tools". The packages acpi-support and pm-utils will be removed.

Then, with using sudo in the

/etc/default/acpi-support

write or copy the following lines at the end:

# Switch to laptop-mode on battery power - off by default as it causes odd
# Hangs on some machines
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE = true

Then change the Laptop-Mode on Battery with sudo in the /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf to 1
like here:

ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_BATTERY = 1

Restart the computer and it should work. If you speak German so you can find under

http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/laptop-mode-utils

a detailed description.

I hope you could understand my english

Good luck

I deinstalled the pm-utils 1.4 with synaptic. Download the package pm-utils 1.3.0-1ubuntu1_all_deb from

"http://packages.ubuntu.com/de/lucid/all/pm-utils/download"

and installed it.

Now it workes fine and all functions remain in the best way.

In my opinion the error lies in the current pm-utils package. But I am only a completely normal user and not a programmer!

Would anybody test it too and write a coment?

In my case, on a laptop Dell Vostro 1510 hung script from the package pm-utils 1.4.1-r1, namely pm-powersave. I copied all the scripts from /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d in /etc/pm/power.d and withdrew from all the execute bit - thus blocking scripts from /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d . Then removing them one by one found that the computer hangs in the performance pcie_aspm. I will try to examine the issue more deeply, if possible.

I can reproduce the bug behaviour by running:

echo powersave > /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy

That's exactly what /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/pcie_aspm does
when the system runs on battery.

I'm not programmer, I'm not going to dig into kernel sources for
now, but I think the primary problem lies in dodgy ACPI BIOSes
of our systems (too many Dell systems are affected).

The temporary workaround for the 10.10 would be to remove
pcie_aspm script from pm-utils package.

People are welcomed for testing!

Did you run the echo command in the root console?

If not you probably got the "Permission denied" message. You have to run it as root.

What I do:
sudo bash
echo powersave > /sys/module/pcie_aspm/parameters/policy

My system crashes sometimes after 4 second, sometimes after 20-30 seconds, sometimes even
after 1 minute, but crashes ALWAYS after I run the echo.

What this does it prevents

It's better way than to modify

because your changes might be lost in future

Yes, uncheck the box. But you have to do this with admin privileges of course. For such operations I use nautilus as sudo (start it in the terminal: sudo nautilus).
I think the unchecking of the box leads to this behaviour: the system finds a file, tries to execute it instead of some standard procedure, but is then not able to execute it.

Another dell studio 1558 user here, I tried two different solutions found on the internet for this bug.

Solution 1: Downgrade package pm-utls from version 1.4.1-3(Maverick) to 1.3.0-1ubuntu1(Lucid)
It works well but still suffers from random freezing (Several times per day)

Solution 2 as described in comment #50:
It works for the first 30 minutes, and then freezes. I don't know for how long other 1558 users tried on their laptops.
I tried twice on mine and both froze after 25-30minutes.

So far, this has been a serious problem to the daily use of my 1558 since I need to unplug the adapter several times during
the day for meetings. And it looks like there won't be a fix for this until the next major release. I am consider rolling back to Lucid as one of my colleagues did.

I had seemingly random freezes several times a day, only when on battery. I'm almost always on wifi so it's likely the identical error condition of battery + wifi triggered it.

Downgrading pm-utils to version 1.3.0-1ubuntu1 fixed the issue for me.

Using Comments #50 and #54 I did the following to prevent the freezes on my Packard Bell MZ35

I created an empty file by right clicking on the desktop and choosing "Create Document" and then "Empty File"
Then I gave the file the name

pcie_aspm

I repeated this to create another empty file called

wireless

The two files were be copied to the folder /etc/pm/power.d

I started the terminal with the command ctrl-alt-T
navigated to the Desktop folder with

cd Desktop

and pasted in this command

sudo cp pcie_aspm /etc/pm/power.d

followed by

sudo cp wireless /etc/pm/power.d

Once this had been done I pulled out the power lead and found my laptop no longer crashed.
I think a restart is necessary as within an hour my computer performed a bizarre reboot that must have been caused by confusing the pm-utils
I have had no such crashes since.

One of the reasons might be that this bug affects mainly (or only) Dell machines with ATI chipset.
If nobody of developers or testers has that machine, it's impossible for them to debug the bug :-(

I personally found Dell BIOSes quite dodgy, especially ACPI part, for example my Express Card slot
has no hot-plug capability under Linux, or I had issue changing LCD brightness using keyboard, etc.

I'm running an HP 8530w and obviously it affects me. The title of this bug should be changed because it doesn't just affect Dell computers. This really sucks. Linux is great but to have a serious bug like this that affects the stability of the OS is totally unacceptable.

My environment is:
HP Elitebook 8530w
Nvidia Quadro FX570 w/ Cuda
Intel Wireless N 5300
Broadcom GbE NIC
Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64

These freezes/crashes result in total lockup. Power off is the only recourse. This usually happens when disconnecting the power cord, after resuming from suspend.

Scenario 1:
Working from home,
Suspend and take my notebook to the office
Dock it in the docking station and turn it on
LOCK UP

Scenario 2:
Working in the office with my notebook docked in the docking station
Nvidia settings is Twinview with my notebook monitor and an LCD screen
Disable the LCD and prepare to go home
Undock the notebook because I want to suspend and leave
LOCK UP

Scenario 3:
Wake up from suspend undocked
Crank up Chromium Browser
Scroll down a long page, like this one with all of these bug threads
LOCK UP

I am facing the same problem. I have DELL VOstro 3700 with core i7, NVIDIA, Broadcom 4313.

Earlier the system used to hang whenever I try to access wireless. I got a work around for the same by uninstalling broadcom drivers those were from Ubuntu repo, and downloaded from Broadcom website.

But the switching to battery problem is still there.

The system was shipped with 9.10, which I upgraded to 10.10. There the problem started. The system would hang within minutes of switching to battery. Then I thought of "upgrading" it further and tried to install 11.04, still no luck. I tried both 32bit and 64 bit for all these OS's (except for 9.10 64-bit).

pcie_aspm

I repeated this to create another empty file called

wireless

The two files were be copied to the folder /etc/pm/power.d

I started the terminal with the command ctrl-alt-T
navigated to the Desktop folder with

cd Desktop

and pasted in this command

sudo cp pcie_aspm /etc/pm/power.d

sudo cp wireless /etc/pm/power.d

Once this had been done I pulled out the power lead and found my laptop no longer crashed.
I think a restart is necessary as within an hour my computer performed a bizarre reboot that must have been caused by confusing the pm-utils

The Active State Power Management (ASPM) driver pcie_aspm in the default mode appears to be picking up the configuation from the BIOS default, which seems to be causing issues on this particular Vostro.

I suggest as a workaround disabling PCIe ASPM with the kernel parameter: pcie_aspm=off

To do so, as edit /etc/default/grub and change:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=off"

and re-run upgrade-grub.

If this fixes the problem, then it's most certainly a BIOS misconfiguration. Please can you verify this and let me know your results.

First, I'm glad to see somebody from kernel team here ;-)

Second, I've tried your "pcie_aspm=off" kernel parameter.

Short answer:
-----------------
It DOES work for me. I will observe my machine and report,
if it crashed. For now, I type this message on machine running
on battery.

Long answer:
-----------------
I did undo the changes in /etc/pm/power.d from my post #50.
Then I switched off the machine.
Turned on, logged on, waited 1 minute, synced and pulled off
the power cord. System crashed after 7-8 seconds.
By doing this I verified, that the bug is still present.
So far so good.
Then I started machine again, logged in, done what post #76
wants, turned machine off.
Turned machine on, logged in, waited 1 minute, synced,
pulled power cord off the laptop and NOTHING bad has happened.

Very good, Colin.

I already expected ACPI BIOS of my Dell machine to be the suspect,
but what makes no sense to me is that I have this freezing problem
only with Intel 4965AGN WiFi card...

My question is: What side effect can I expect from "pcie_aspm=off"?

Sorry for the delay in replying... miroslav's solution didnt work for me... In fact I had done exactly what you are saying in #75. The freezing is now reduced to almost twice/thrice a day.

But it has started another problem (I dont know whether I have messed up some other files also!!!). Also I dont know whether they are related!!!

The machine get very hot. The CPU temp goes close to 75C... I have observed that most of the freezing occurs when the temp goes very high. I am generally doing a regular work on the machine (mainly usual internet browsing (without much of java or flash) or dealing with text files.) So dont expect CPU+GPU to be over heated!

PCI Express Active State Power Management (ASPM) defines a protocol for the PCI Express components in the D0 (fully on)
operating state to reduce the Link power. This is achieved by putting their Links into a low power state and informing the
other end of the link to go into a low power state too.

The Pros to using ASPM:

+ saving power, depends on your machine and devices on the PCI link, but could be a Watt or so of savings. Your mileage may vary.

Cons:
- introduces device latency
- the default mode is based on the BIOS settings, which may be wrong

One can experiment with different pcie_aspm settings, for example:

pcie_aspm=off
   - disables ASPM.
pcie_aspm=default
   - use BIOS provided ASPM settings
pcie_aspm=performance
   - disables ASPM and clock power management
pcie_aspm=powersave
   - highest power saving mode, enable ASPM and clock power management

Thanks for you replay, I google-d a little bit
to get the understanding what's PCIE_ASPM
like and I found the explanation on the Intel
site.

I run my notebook with pcie_aspm=off parameter,
because it solves the machine crash when pulling
out the power cord.

I didn't study the kernel sources, but I'm still
curious how the kernel sets the
powersave/performance mode. It must set
some registers in hardware and the question is
are these settings chipset independent or are
they different for amd/intel/via/... ?
Are they defined in BIOS for every machine (like settings
for "default")?

In my case I have all this crashing problems only because:

1) amd chipset bug
this does not explain why my laptop doesn't crash when
using another internal pcie wifi card, only with intel

2) bios bug

3) intel wifi card hardware bug

4) intel iwlang kernel module bug

Until we know where exactly is the problem, we must
blacklist the problematic machines in pm-utils (because
pm-utils do the job of performance/powersave switching).

Colin Ian King (colin-king) wrote :

@Miroslav,

It may be one of several issues. So if you are willing, we can tease these out with some sanity checks. I've just read an ASPM document from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg462958.aspx and it states:

"If the BIOS indicates that the platform does not properly support ASPM, the operating system disables ASPM. This can be conveyed in the ACPI fixed ACPI description table (FADT) table IAPC_BOOT_ARCH flags by setting the PCIe ASPM Controls bit to 1."

To sanity check this, can you send me a copy of your ACPI tables using:

sudo acpidump > acpidump.txt

..and I will see what the IAPC_BOOT_ARCH flag is configured to.

Incidentally, the BIOS default basically refers to how the firmware configured the PCI config regions for your PCI-e devices - it may be that theses are mis-configured and causes the wifi card to misbehave when the kernel tries to go into a power saving state and the H/W does not support it correctly. It's hard to tell w/o some further investigation.

@Miroslav,

Thanks for the ACPI data, it was most helpful to bring some insight.

the IA-PC boot flags does state that "PCIe ASPM is not supported":

[0x06d 0109 2] IA-PC Boot Flags (see below): 0x0000
                           Legacy Devices Supported (V2): 0x0
                      8042 present on ports 60/64 (V2): 0x0
                                            VGA Not Present (V4): 0x0
                                        MSI Not Supported (V4): 0x0
                           PCIe ASPM Not supported (V4): 0x0

and this apparently is what Windows 7 seems to follow (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/bus/pci/aspm.mspx). So it appears that the Linux aspm driver is not taking this advice into consideration and hence we get the problem. Disabling ASPM via the boot option "pcie_aspm=off" hence makes sense. I will open a discussion with the Intel developers and see what they make of this.

For me it still doesn't explain the fact, that the

simply works without problem.

At least we're moving somewhere.

Would it be helpfull for you if other people (with
exactly same symptoms!) posted their acpi dumps?
Just to make sure all is about the ignored

Miroslav, perhaps it works on the Broadcom Wifi card because it can handle the link request to power it down, where as the other device cannot. From what I understand, the ASPM protocol can power down the link and where possible, devices on the link.

I wonder if pcie_aspm=performance will make it behave differently.

Have you found something suspicious in the logs after the crash?

To increase the chance having something logged press and hold
Alt+Print and keep pressing S so quickly as you can. With other
hand pull out the power cord and keep pressing S until the machine
crashes.

Then reboot and check the logs.

@Miroslav,

Looking at the iwl driver it has a workaround for a H/W bug that addresses instability on the PCIe bus L0->L0S->L1 transitions and disables L0S. The workaround seems to check the PCI configuration as set by the firmware, hence this may a reason for the bug.

Currently I suspect the following scenario:

1. The driver can workaround a bug in the H/W, if the firmware has configured the PCI space correctly.
2. We may not have the PCI_CFG_LINK_CTRL_VAL_L1_EN bit set correctly, so the driver can't work around the H/W bug which disables L0S.
3. The link management may be then transitioning the H/W to L0S and we get into the situation where it appears the wireless H/W disappears when the link power management kicks in.
4. We see errors like "HARDWARE GONE?? INTA == 0xffffffff" which seems to confirm this.

So, can you attach the output of "sudo lspci -xxxx" so I can eyeball the config space and see if this is what is happening.

The problem is that now the fans are on all the time and the laptop seems to get hotter, is this a subjective impression or it's an expected consequence of disabling PCIe ASPM?

I think your laptop overheats and shuts down (for safety reasons),
I don't think it has something to do with the PCIE active state power
management, thanks to Colin's sollution your laptop started to
work on battery but fails for other reason.

If it shuts down during heavy load, that suggests the dusty heatsink
or lack of good thermal contact between CPU/GPU/chipset and heatsink.
When I worked in Dell factory, sometimes we got faulty heatsinks
from the supplier and all the computers failed during the build test.

The laptop should never turn off itself during the heavy load,
only when the cooling areas are blocked, i.e. you forget it under
the duvet.
Otherwise it's the good reason for asking for replacement.

If your laptop gets hot during idle, you check the CPU power
management, i.e. you put the "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor"
applet on the top tray and check what frequency your CPU runs
on. This applet also allows you to set the CPU power management,
I suggest the "ondemand" mode.

Indeed, I have to remove a dust cake from between fan and heat sink about every 6 month or my Acer Extensa 5630Z will not be able to run with full power for more than a few minutes.

This is a bit of a design failure as there is no easy to remove filter. Instead I have to open the main hatch (6 screws) and remove the fan, which is way more fiddly than this should be.

Since you say it shuts down with and without the pcie_aspm=off parameter it indeed looks like a different problem.

Next steps I can think of:

Make sure that Prime95 on windows 7 is running at full speed on all cores. Maybe it is running with reduced speed and that is the reason it does not overheat and shut down. In that case dust could still be the culprit.

Is it a temperature induced shutdown at all? Look at what the temperature does. Look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/HighTemperatures. Bug 563815 might also offer a few hints as to where to look.

Last but not least. Make a separate bug report with ubuntu-bug linux from a terminal window. We shouldn't mix different issues. Feel free to subscribe me to your new report.

This behaviour started after installing Ubuntu 11.04 and continued with Linux Mint Debian XFCE [2.6.32-5-686] until applying the above mentioned fix (from comment #37)... so It might well be an upstream kernel bug.

It didnt happen with Linux Mint 9 LXDE - Ubuntu 10.04 based - but I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 in an attempt to acquire CPU throttling as my Vostro 3700 recently required servicing from overheating and turning itself off after 15 min of Handbrake video encoding. Hi,

I have been having problems with my Dell Studio 15 freezing intermittently when on battery for months. I have read many, many posts on this topic and tried many different tweaks to no avail. Reverting to an earlier version of pm_utils worked, but I lost the ability to put my laptop on standby, so that was no good. I decided it was time for me to do some analysis and try a few tweaks of my own. Well, it looks like I have come up with a successful work around that should work for any type of wireless card.

I run Mint 10 and have the latest version of pm-utils installed - 1.4.1. tailing /var/log/pm-powersave.log reveals that /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless is called to put the wireless card into powersave mode when the power cord is removed. I found the specific section of code that makes that change is at the end of the script:

case $1 in
    true) wireless_powersave on;;
    false) wireless_powersave off ;;
    *) exit $NA ;;
esac

I simply changed it to:

case $1 in
    true) wireless_powersave off;;
    false) wireless_powersave off ;;
    *) exit $NA ;;
esac

This results in the card never being put into powersave mode and has stopped the freezing. This change does not appear to affect the power consumption either. So, all is well and I have said goodbye a very frustrating problem. I hope it works for you too.

FYI, my wireless card is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)

Christopher M. Penalver,

sorry I am late, but I've got a lot to do in the last few weeks. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 and it is daily updated ( it is really a great releas!!!). But the bug still happens! After a few seconds Ubuntu crash.
 I did run the command "apport-collect -p linux 656745" But I did it with power ac-adapter.
I hope Icould help. But I don't know where I have to refer the issue and do the tags. Maybe you can do it for me. Sorry I am not able to do that. I am a normal user and english is not my native language.

Thank You

aspera, could you please try the 3.4 mainline kernel (see #161) and report if it still crashes?

@ Jost Menke,

Sorry I'm not able to try it, cause I haven't the knowledge to do that . Mabe you can explane it in short words? I'm using this laptop as a productivity system and I know nothing about the risk to try the mainline kernel. I like to help, but I have to do my work, too. But I will see what I can do...

I tried the mainline kernel on ASUS X51:

The effects are:

-System does not freeze anymore when unplugging AC-Adaptor and running from Battery. Power-Management (Indicators) appears to work properly.

-Two Messages appearing on startup: The first one ata1: softreset failed.... Sorry, they disappear too fast to take full notes.
-System does NOT start up with AC disconnected. It freezes on startup like before. You have to start it up on AC and then unplug AC for being able to run it on battery.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can test anything else.

@Thomas Lenarz: Hmm.. So there seems to be some improvement with the 3.4 kernel, but no final fix. In the meantime, RC4 is out, maybe you want to give it a try:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-rc4-precise/

PS: Did you check if your BIOS is up to date? As others already mentioned, especially the ACPI stuff tends to be broken.

@Jost Menke: Thanks a lot for your reply. I tried the RC4 of the kernel. No change:
It works OK on battery when I pull the plug after start up. Booting up on battery does not work.
The freeze occured just after the sound was played on presentation of the login panel.
A short time after freezing, the screen went blank and I had to switch of manually.

My BIOS is not the latest one. There have been updates by ASUS. However, there was no documentation that any of the updates would fix ACPI problems. Anyway, I haven't got Windows for use of my laptop since it shipped with FreeDos as operating system. ASUS only provide their BIOS-updates in the form of Windows installers which unfortunately leaves me unable to install a BIOS upgrade.

@Christopher: Done. It is Bug #995223.

However, I had to boot again with the last Ubuntu kernel. ubuntu-bug did not allow me to file the bug with active mainline kernel. I hope this makes no difference for the information you need.

Thanks a lot!

Thomas Lenarz: I really strongly advise you to update your BIOS first. Manufacturers tend to fix things without neccessarily mentioning it in the changelog. For example, on my HP nx7400, Speedstep didn't work in Linux until I updated the BIOS to the latest version. The documentation said nothing about it.

If Asus really offers Windows only updates for a product that shipped with DOS, I'd nag them to supply an alternative. Which exact model of the X51 do you have? For the X51R, there is a DOS update procedure:
http://support.asus.com/Documents/detail.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&m=X51R&s=100&hashedid=qvvRL8XY0ncOXxx6&os=&no=1704

I installed the actual beta version on an usb device. Answer, please.

aspera, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.7-rc8

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I tested the latest mainline kernel and can confirm that, the bug still exists on the folloswing mainline kernel:
Linux 3.8.0-999-generic #201212310405

I have used this kernel also after disabling proprietary Wireless lan driver. But that didn't help avoid the crash either.

Nevertheless, I found a workaround for this issue:
Setting the following boot option solves the crash problem:
pcie_aspm=off

The above boot option can be easily set by editing /etc/default/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=off"
And then running "update grub" command.

Thanks.
