I have the same issue... When I try to install ubuntu 10.10 x64 I have to use a little tricks to get it! And it was because the bug "intel ips" So I solved using the live cd and adding to the etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf the following line "blacklist intel_ips" and in this way I was able to install ubuntu...
Now I have the same problem that you are describing, when I use my laptop in battery mode it hang in a black screen and I have to hard reset, as information my laptop is a Core i7 Gateway ID59C and I can work perfectly with my battery in Win 7. Also I can work perfectly with only the AC Adapter in ubuntu, but it is not so funny.
I would love to help to solve this problem but I'm a beginner user in linux, so I could be useful to try anything you request.
Finally, I haven't done anything that you're advicing.
I'm sorry for my bad english, I'm not a native speaker.
