Bug Description

Hello,
Fresh install of Jaunty x86-64 from a daily CD image here.
HP DV8040US laptop w/ ATI 200m video card.
All packages are up to date using Synaptic.

Problem:
the machine will not shut down, and just hangs at some tty w/o keyboard input.
I read another bug similar, but was open for Intrepid here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/264571

So far I resolved it by removing "splash" from grub, and adding "vga=791" instead. as a result, I can now show down the computer properly. I'm not sure what other information I can provide to help.

Hello,
As of Alpha 6, both versions, Ubuntu and Kubuntu still exhibit this behavior.

I am experiencing a similar problem.

Shutdown/reboot start the process then it just goes to a flashing cursor but does not turn the machine off or reboot it. Have tried removing splash from menu.lst and it make no difference except when I attempt shutdown/reboot the last text I see is:

mount: / is busy
* Will now halt

Then the cursor just hangs there until I press the off button. Kernel log, syslog and Dmesg show nothing unusual (as far as I can tell). The problem only occurs when using Gnome.

If I boot to the recovery kernel (no GUI) then issue the shutdown command it exits and powers off as it is supposed to.

This bug affects me too. But i think, that "/ is busy" isn't the problem.

As for me, i see this incorrect behavior only when "killing all remaining processes fails" on shutdown/reboot, also it depends on running terminal applications.

I am attaching picture, that illustrates this.

Can provide any additional information if requested.

I can confirm this still exists.
This bug is still present for me while using the live CD x86-64, beta version.
My applied changes to grub listed above still work, but w/o splash. Point is, this bug appears to be still valid.

I confirm, that workaround by Robert is good for me, when splash is turned off in menu.lst system reboots well.

But there is another side, the system gets about two time slower at boot! from 25s to GDM to 40s.

I can confirm the issue too.
The issue is solved after the modification.
The Issue does not appear if i hibernate the Notebook.

I have the same problem as Robert McKee above. his jpeg image is exactly the same as mine on screen. I ran Jaunty on HP Pavilion a1228x w/AMD64. I had to reinstall Intrepid until at such time a resolution is found.

I too have exactly same problem and scree0 output as Robert McKee!
I run Jaunty 64 (all updates installed) on my old Medion MD96400 that has an AMD64 Turion Mobile 1.6GHz CPU and 512 MB ram.

I saw the tip about removing the "splash" and "quiet" boot options and adding "vga=791", so I did a more thorough test, trying all combinations of vga=791, splash and quiet (0=off, 1=on). My results were:

V S Q
0 0 0 - Works
0 0 1 - Works (My new default options)
0 1 0 - Does not work
0 1 1 - Does not work (The default options)
1 0 0 - Works
1 0 1 - Works
1 1 0 - Works (!)
1 1 1 - Works (!)

So it seems that there are two workarounds:
- Without vga=791, splash has to be disabled for it to work.
- With vga=791, it does not matter if splash or quiet are enabled or not.

The boot option vga=791 means 16 bit 1024x768 kernel video mode according to http://www.pendrivelinux.com/vga-boot-modes-to-set-screen-resolution/. Since my screen is 1280x800, this pushed the splash screen out of place, so I chose just to disable splash without adding vga=791 as my new default options.)

My startup time was the same in all the tests. (43 seconds +/- 1 second)

I hope someone can figure out what is wrong so we don't have to disable the splash screen for shutdown/reboot to work :)

I fixed this bug on my machine, by changing the settings in the BIOS of the laptop for the video card. By disabling the additional shared RAM "sideport" the machine now boots, suspends, and shows usplash properly.

Removing "splash' from the boot options in grub solved it for me. I did nothing else but that. Wish they would fix this. I'm using Xubuntu x64.

I have a Lenovo X200 laptop running Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04.

This bug was just that...annoying.

I removed splash from the menu.lst file and it appears to have successfully resolved the problem. Shutdown is now in a handful of second. Previously the machine would take 90+ seconds and default to the log-in window. Then it would take at least that to shutdown from there.

I also have Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 on another Lenovo X200 laptop. This bug is not evident.

The bug doesn't appear so far under Ubuntu 9.10. I presume it is a
9.04-related bug. With 9.10 I also have no problems with Usplash
anymore.

From my experience so far I would recommend the subscribers to make a
switch to (K)Ubuntu 9.10.
