Chris,

thanks for the reply. When I edited the boot line I found 'quiet' but no
'splash'.
I removed 'quiet', but it made no difference.

Thanks again,
John

if this can't be fixed for Jaunty final, it should at least be mentioned in the release notes! many user won't notice their notebook isn't completly shut down and will see their accumulator completely empty the next time they want to use the notebook

I'm marking the ubuntu-release-notes task invalid here. Whatever problems people are having with shutting down in jaunty, this doesn't appear to be generalizable, or even understood well enough that we could tell users anything useful about it in the release notes at this point. We don't want this to turn into a meta-bug attracting comments from anyone who has any sort of problem with their system not powering off, because there are many possible causes for such a bug that may be completely unrelated to one another.

If further diagnosis is done on this bug so that it's better understood, we can revisit the question of including it in the release notes; but currently, there appear to be three different bugs being described in this one bug report alone.

All,
I may have solved this issue.
I just installed two different kernels, the vanilla "generic" and "server".
All exhibit the same behavior as I fist listed above.
On a hunch, I went into my bios and set the Video Graphic Mode to "SidePort" instead of "UMA+Sideport"
Installing the other kernels put grub back to a default status, and removed my added vga=791.

Now, the machine shuts down properly.

Is this a bug with the radeon driver, or some type of memory write issue?

I have the same problem and my video card is an Intel 4500, so it doesn't seem to be video card related. I've read in another bug report (I don't have the number at hand) that it may be related to the iwlagn module, but again it is difficult to know.

Right now the iwlagn module seems to be related to at least another bug in my system (including this one, which I think it is related to iwlagn), causing random hangups.

I have to carry some tests to determine if this is true or not, though. Right now I just have a suspicion...

Just noticed the bug was "confirmed" for "usplash". If installing linux-backport-modules-jaunty solved the problem for many of us, maybe the bug is not entirely "usplash" related :??

Looks like it is a double bug: half related with the WiFi card not stopping because the module, half related to some video cards :??

I ran into this same system similar after upgrading to Jaunty on a system that uses autofs and network-manager. The problem was that network-manager by default does not share the connection, so when the user logged out, networking stopped and any network filesystems that were mounted when the user logged out would cause shutdown to hang. The workaround was to check 'Available to all users' for the network connection in network-manager.

Gerard Dethier (g-dethier) wrote :

In my case, installing linux-backport-modules-jaunty also solved the problem. Actually, usplash was not causing the bug but hiding the real cause : an iwl3945 (or maybe more generally iwlagn) crash.

Raphael Gradenwitz (raphael-gradenwitz) wrote :

I could reproduce all this behavior here.
The main reason for this is (imho!) because of a little (maybe forgotten?) bug in the update-rc.d script:
Quote 'man update-rc.d':
"..Obviously, therefore, the default stop sequence number should be 80. Defaulting to 20, as update-rc.d does, is an old bug .."
It defaults setting the simlinks to 20. As a result, the sendsigs init-script tries to kill all remaining processes while some network filesystems (nfs, cifs, smb) are not yet umounted and/or the networking is not yet stoped etc..
Those symlinks (/etc/rc0.d/S20sendsigs and /etc/rc6.d/S20sendsigs) must be simply renamed to put them on '80', resulting in /etc/rc0.d/S80sendsigs and /etc/rc6.d/S80sendsigs.

This should fix this (it did for me reproducable):
Copy&Paste this Code in your terminal (all in one line):

  sudo update-rc.d -f sendsigs remove && sudo update-rc.d sendsigs start 80 0 6 .

(The last . (dot) is part of the code!)

just Edit the file named menu.lst and find the kernel line like in grub, and remove ACPI=OFF

removig "ACPI=OFF" and adding "pnpbios=OFF", solved my problem.

As the driver for the aforementioned wireless card is integrated in the kernel, I am posting this bug referred to this package. I also attach the result of lspci command in my laptop.

I hope this info can help, if you need something else, let me know.

I have also installed linux-backports-modules and linux-restricted-modules without any change. I have also noticed this behaviour with the Alpha 4 of Karmic Koala. I haven't been able to fix the problem with the possible solutions mentioned in the comments of this page. I filed a bug report in Bugzilla Intellinuxwireless (http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2081), but they said it was not a problem of the driver.

I too have just found my Jaunty box with the "Power Down" message displayed on the monitor from 9 hours previously and the PC still powered up. It wouldn't respond to anything, I had to hold the power button down to get it to switch off.

I have seen this several times before with Jaunty. I believe it only happens if, on shutdown, it detects that programs are running and comes up with a dialog box about wait or log off anyway, which happened last night. I cannot recall ever having it not power down without this message occuring.

I hope this observation helps.

Maybe an additional note is that it behaves like this when having to interact with the NVIDIA propietary drivers (actually I am using 185.18.36).

Yes, complementing my previous comment, I am attaching the NVIDIA bug report Log. I know that you cannot change or improve the NVIDIA drivers but maybe in the log you can see what is causing this rare behaviour (maybe a misinteraction between the packages, as I asummed previously) and fix it accordingly.

I have also sent an email to the NVIDIA linux support team, with the same log, as to see if something is not functioning properly.

I hope it helps....

I have Sony Vaio VGN-S460 with NVIDIA and this bug is affecting me. It was working fine in 8.04 but now that I upgraded to 9.10, shutdown hangs (with the HDD led on).

Hello,
Although I have not got around to adding this on launchpad, I got my
machine working perfectly by adding two items to grub during boot.
radeon.modeset=0 noapic

So far, 10.04 Alpha is working great.
