lockups with default (hpet) clocksource on 2.6.27-2-generic 64-bit

I was experiencing lockups where nothing would happen until I pressed any key on the keyboard. One fairly consistent way of reproducing this situation was to log out of a gnome session; then I'd have to press a key several times in order for the X server to restart completely. It would eventually restart by itself but took several minutes. This happened 5 times out of the 10 i tried it. Booting with clocksource=jiffies seems to fix the problem (by default the clocksource was hpet). There were no lockups when logging out 10 times with clocksource=jiffies. This seems to affect several kernels; certainly 2.6.27-2 and probably 2.6.27-1 and 2.6.26-5. All the kernels I have tried have been 64-bit. I am using an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" and an Asus P5Q motherboard (I think it has an intel p45 chipset).

I am also having this issue. I don't have any dmesg results to post yet. I have not let the machine sit long enough when it does this to realize it was actually doing something.

It has done this since I switched to intrepid about a month ago (during the beta). With the final release and the 2.6.27-7 kernel (running 32 bit kernel) I am having this problem as well. But for me, typically I'm just typing along and it goes kaput.

Del inspiron E1705 Intel Core 2 DUO cpu. My logs look similar to the above posted log. I'll see if I can get some dmesg outputs as well and post those back.

Happened to me again... However, it never came back, but I was able to ssh into the machine remotely and run a dmesg. Doesn't appear to be any messages. The keyboard is completely locked out, but the mouse works.

This is rather annoying, 4th time today it has done this.

I am also getting these messages, albeit on an Arch Linux 64-bit install. My hardware is a MacbookPro3,1 and my nvidia driver version is 177.82. I just installed a couple days ago and can't definitively associate my symptoms with these messages, but here's what I've been noticing:
- Occasionally (after leaving the system running for a long time) it will freeze during shutdown.
- It seems to "slow down" over time. I notice it most when I switch virtual desktops -- if there is a maximized Firefox running, it appears very sluggishly
- My wireless connection will drop and I am unable to regain the carrier (probably unrelated?)

Hi, I also has this problem here though I'm using fedora, kernel 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.i686.
I'm not totally locked up but the mouse moves slowly and the kernel dumps the message:

Sometimes Ubuntu freezes during shutdown and I'm loosing wireless ans ADSL connections. This only happens when I'm using Deluge or Transmission torrents. And this is happening since I've upgraded to network-manager 0.7.

I am also experiencing this bug. I have got an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 (2.5 GHz). Other hardware on the system include an Intel GMA x3100 integrated graphics card and Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AGN.
As for the dmesg, it does not always contain anything related to time keeping after a hangup have occured. Also, if I use clocksource=jiffies the system is rendered unusable (GDM doesn't start properly and it takes an awful lot of time to get into a virtual terminal) but that is probably a separate bug.

I've had the affected computer running with that boot-option for several hours, leaving it unattended with programs that I usually had running when the lockup occured for quite a while (this would usually trigger a lockup) and so far it seems like it is gone.

Peter, I tried the noapic boot option, trying:

None of them worked, either it screwed up the workings of my computer or it still froze. Would you mind explaining exactly how you did it?

In fact Ive been trying the workaround, it works, but... when I run OpenGL applications (those that seem to cause the lookups and the hpet increasing) they run really slow. So I've come back to work without the noapic option

I am also experiencing this problem. The laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520) will lock up, with Caps Lock and Scroll Lock LEDs flashing in unison, which I have read indicates a kernel panic. Once it happened randomly when shutting down, but I can usually reproduce it (though the time span varies) by sending large files over a wireless link with rsync.

I'm running Kubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) on x64 hardware. In case it is helpful, I'm including the entire lspci output:

zmzach, I've just got "noapic clocksource=hpet" appended to the other options. Unless my memory fails me nolapic would mess up things badly. Also, I am using a 64-bit version of ubuntu on a 64-bit processor, if you have got a 32-bit ubuntu and/or a 32-bit processor this bug may not apply to you.

Mitchell, for me these lockups would happen at random with no correlation to the usage of openGL, nor does the original reporter say anything about openGL.

On a sidenote, I think I may have observerd the same problem in 9.04 (I left a program install to run by itself while I went away to do something else and it seemed to have stopped when I got back while it should have been finished considering the time I had been away).

I can also confirm this bug on Jaunty 9.04 - Intel Core Duo P9600 with an Nvidia 9600M (module 180.51)

I've tried noapic, and clocksource=hpet to no avail as well.

Although with clocksource enabled the lock up seemed to stutter for a second, normally it locks right up with massive artifacts or a complete white screen. In this case, it seemed the machine started to lock up - recovered for a second and then completely locked up.

If you need logs or anything else to narrow this down - please don't hesitate to ask. I'd love to see this get resolved. I can't tell if it's the Nvidia module or not, I've tried different versions on the module as well.

Same problem here, typically happens after around 20min of fullscreen Video Playback, sometimes even before KDM is launched. Some people say this might be caused by WiFi modules (especially on Broadcom 43xx cards) and suggest to append "blacklist b43" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. Some say this might be linked to power management (hence the "acpi=none" and "nolapic" suggestions)...

Is anyone really working on this subject? For me this is MAJOR and not MEDIUM problem, since the computer has to be restarted every 30min and sometimes does not even go to KDM before stalling!

It was happening before the nvidia driver was even installed, and after - definitely interrupt related since keypresses, mouse movements - even inserting a CD cause it to wake up.

The issue appears a bit after boot. Grepping kern.log and kern.log*.gz shows it happens between 18 minutes after boot and 16 hours after boot (in that case the system had been suspended most of the time). Sometimes the issue doesn't show up at all, but I often can't have the computer on for very long. The slowdown seems to take quite a long time to happen, often 10 or 20 minutes between each message. Due to needing to use the laptop I have rebooted the system before it reached the "freeze" point.

Ok tested the workarounds:
* clocksource=jiffies caused X to refuse to start
* noapic booted and X worked, but didn't fix the issue. Rather it make it happen a lot quicker after boot. Often less than a minute. Going to test with other clock sources, like acpi pm timer.

I had this exact issue on a Dell Precision M6300. With no apparent reason, the computer just freezes. Depending on what I'm doing the uptime before the freeze is between 1 and 3 hours. I tried all the things proposed here, but nothing worked. I also tried to disabled the BIOS settings for virtulization extensions but it did not solved the issue. I also disabled the acpi system but the system still freezes.

I have the feeling that the freeze happens when the cooling system is supposed to be started up or shut down, but it's just an impression.

I tried with debian testing and the new ubuntu 9.10 beta, but the problem is still there.

I could speed up the freeze by running glxgears and open a few flash videos in firefox. It's a matter of 10-20 minutes before it hangs.

All this tests were done with 64bit distributions/kernels. Yesterday I installed an ubuntu 9.10 32bit and the computer has been running for a few hours without freezing.

I can confirm this problem on Karmic. After a while playing videos they start to lock up. I'm running an up to date Karmic with x-updates ppa. I have a Intel GM965 graphics card, usually used in extened desktop setup (VGA & LVDS as one big desktop).
Adding hpet=disable to the kernel seems to solve the problem, I've had no lockups since.

I have the same problem with freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala 64bit. I can reproduce it within 10 minutes with lots of network traffic (deluge torrrent download). Hang happens soon after line: "CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 15000 nsec" in /var/log/messages. There comes other info soon after that, seems like kernel writes the modules currently loaded, content of registers and so on, but nothing of it is committed to disc and is lost after crash, I tried running sync in 5s loop to get messages saved but it does not help :(

Tried clocksource=jiffies, after splash screen, screen black nothing happens. Kernel don't seem to load (Strange that it works in other AMILO Xi 2550). Had to remove it. Maybe I did something wrong. I had line

Just in case it helps, I've been running ubuntu 9.10 32 bits with pae support (I have 4G of RAM) for more than a mounth without lockups. As K1T suggested, deactivating acpi helped but I didn't like the idea of not beeing able to "see" the temperature of the laptop while working with it.

I've fixed it for my laptop with compressed air.

I've seen hpet message too. And my laptop would become very slow. I even measured this slow down. It was alway about x10 times slower or x60 slower. Surprisingly it was still very usable with x10. These slowdowns were random and intermittent. Sometime it would survive reboot. This is how I figured it was HW related. I've opened my hp6910p laptop, and cleaned up motherboard from dust with compressed air can. No more slowdowns or hpet messages.

I am having this problem too, on Karmic 9.10, 2.6.31-19-generic-tuxonice #56~ppa1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Feb 4 10:56:23 UTC 2010 x86_64. Machine is Acer Aspire Timeline 3810T-6775.

Besides installing tuxonice kernel (and fbsplash tuxoniceui) a few days ago I edited the broken laptop-mode script /usr/share/laptop-mode-tools/modules/wireless-iwl-power today as described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/laptop-mode-tools/+bug/508938 to properly enable power management on my intel 5100 wifi.

Since this is my most recent change and hpet-related system freezes have only happened so far while unplugged (turning iwlagn power management on) I suspect it may have to do with iwlagn or laptop-mode I also have to use backports wireless module for power saving, even though it yeilds generally abysmal b/g/n speeds.

My system only shows one hpet message before applications start to segfault, sometimes quite a bit later (happened with Virtualbox, NetworkManager and a few other programs):

Hi, I got this error for the first time some days ago, I didn't change anything and suddenly my system started crashing, going into kernel panic.
I've a Dell Vostro 1510 with Nvidia card, Ubuntu 9.10 - 64 bit and a custom kernel 2.6.32.3, compiled some months ago and that always run fine.

In my logs, I found messages like eval- ones, about hpet increasing min_delta and rsyslog/kmsg started.
This morning I tried uninstalling rsyslog, and since then everything is fine, I haven't had a kernel panic for the last 6 hours, while this morning I got 3 (!!) panic in just one hour, and the last weekend I got a panic every time I use my note, every hour.

I don't know if this is the solution, I really hope it continues to work.. I need my note for my job, and I'm very disappointed about this sort of problems, it seems like Ubuntu is trying to emulate Windows also with these I-dont-know-yesterday-was-working problems. I'm really considering to get Gentoo.

I don't know what's wrong with rsyslog, I don't remember, maybe last friday this package or something linked to it was updated?

I'm suffering badly from these hpet messages in Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 x86 it seems. Don't know how critical they really are.

I've seen it go as high is ~800000 nsecs. Right now things are slow, graphics seem to be suffering the most. However, there are no lockups and apps don't crash randonmly. Note that I cannot say for sure if the slowdown is caused by those hpet-messages or not. But every time I notice slowdown, I usually see some hpet messages in the kernel log as well. Lenovo Thinkpad Z61m, Intel Core Duo, 3GB RAM, ATI X1400 graphics, radeon KMS+Compiz.

"clocksource=jiffies" helped me

The only thing that could cause keyboard freezing is the high mid-spring temperature. No recent software or hardware updates.

Configuration: Dell D830 laptop (Intel T8100, Quadro NVS 140M, Intel 3945ABG wifi controller), Debian squeeze :)

Affects me as well, every day.

At first i thougt this had something to do with Ubuntu 9.04 so i switched to openSuSE 11.3 but the but is still there.

I'm using a Dell D620 laptop, and Nvidias propitary drivers.

The program usually comes after using VLC to watch movies for ~35 minutes.
The video starts to be slow like if i was playing it on a very old computer.
After closing VLC, Gnome remains extremely unresponsive, but does not freeze.

In my case nohz=off in grub options fixes problem. Hey @KIT and @Ps I also have Amilo XI 2550, may be nohz is slightly better than "nolapic acpi=off"?

it's a dell xps studio 16

it mostly doesn't freeze but in firefox i can reproduze freezes (screen goes fullscreen one colour - mostly black or the background-colour of the website i visit).
it happens when i click on a link to a website with heavy java-script use or flash-content?! *just my opinion*

and if it once went unresponsible and i do a powerdown.... and then reboot it... i can get it freezing again and again and again... just by visiting the same website and clicking on a link?!

with google chrome or opera there are no problem at this point... and when i opened the site in opera or chrome... firefox can load it without freezing up too?!
it's really strange...

(you can see where i had to reboot my device because it was unresponsible... just look at the timestamps... where they are resetted)

i tried to load a flash-site within firefox which immediatly crashed firefox.

then i tried to load the same site in chrome and it reported me this:

i got this plug-in right from the adobe-site. it's the latest version and meant for 64bit systems.

after some attempts i was able to detect the sources of my lock-ups and firefox crashes.

firefox (flashplugin) crashes.

description:
i had the 64bit beta flashplugin from the adobe website installed like it's mentioned in some wikis (ubuntuusers.de and so on).
(my testing site for the crashes was http://ritter-sport.de/ - i don't know why it happened all the time on this site but you could test your flashplugin there too)

solution:
so i uninstalled this plugin and did the "normal" way of installing it:
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

i think this is the default 32bit flashplugin but now my crashes are gone.

problem:
(firefox) system lock-ups.

description:
the problem above with the crashes happened usually.
but on some other websites my complete system got unresponsive - the screen was filled with one color (mostly black) and i wasn't able to do anything (couldn't change my session with ctrl + alt + fx or end firefox with alt + f4). the only thing i could do was holding down my powerbutton and boot the system again.

way to the solution:
after going through all the logs i found some lines in the syslog which got my attention immediately like the hpet ones:

firstly i was still using the open source driver for my ati radeon because it was recommened to use it as long as no errors/problems occur and it was okay because it is already capable of displaying 3d content as i need it for my compiz fusion desktop.
secondly i used it because this is my second installation of lucid and in the first one the proprietary ati driver lead to some problems. on startup it used (and still uses) the wrong solution (it's looking horrible). and it seemed that the ati driver has some conflicts with my wlan driver (i think it's named "wl") on my dell wireless mini 1397 card because the driver was not loaded about 3 of 5 times at startup. (i'm not actually sure anymore if this was the reason for that because now it seems to work like a charme)

solution:
in short i just installed the proprietary ati driver "flgrx".
the simpliest way to do this is:
System --> Systemadministration --> Hardware Driver

after that my solution at startup is still messed up but i don't have any problems with freezes anymore since then.
(and i think the solution can be configured anywhere but i didn't look for that until now - but i will)

I have the same problem on a Dell Studio machine. I am now critically affected by this bug: it freezes randomly, or reboots randomly... so can't use my laptop more than 5 mins!

I had 10.4 installed, upgraded to 11.4 hoping it would be better... problem still there! This could come with problems of over heating, since I have also fan probles...

I do not show the error message as it is the same as all people here... but happy to give more details if necessary!!

I understood that some poeple got rid of it by changing some options... excuse my ignorance but I did not understand where following options should be changed:
-noapic nolapic

in which fil eis it?

aph, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.
