Bug Description

I'm on 12.10. The wifi adapter doesn't seem to be recognized at all: doesn't show up in NetworkManager, no adapter listed by iwconfig. The wifi card seems to be a RTL8188E (lspci -nn tells me it's 10ec:8179).

I've tried to:
   - install the Realtek driver for the RTL8188CE (seemed close enough...)
   - install the driver from https://github.com/tianon/linux-rtlwifi-8188ce
   - install linux-backports-modules-cw
   - upgrade to kernel 3.7

None of those worked.

It's weird, 3.10 RC should support your wireless card, have you changed any module setting, or not enabled these kernel option?

the modules are rtlwifi and rtl8188ee

Thank you for your posting. After reading your posting I have installed the 3.10 and now on my Lenovo Q190 I can use WIFI.

The uname -a confirms that I have the correct kernel

uname -a
Linux charles-pc 3.10.0-031000-generic #201306301935 SMP Sun Jun 30 23:36:16 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Now, all I need to do is to make this kernel the default boot choice instead of the 3.10 rc5. For now I am choosing advanced options at boot up and then selecting the 3.10 kernel with the WIFI drivers.

Since the issue was fixed, would you please close the ticket? Thank you.
------------------------------------------

Step-by-step guide:
1.Open the following link http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
2.Scroll the page 'till the last position which was in my case
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc3-saucy/
3.Download ALL deb files which are appropriate for your system architecture
(32bit or 64bit), then put them in same folder for easy process.
4.Install the downloaded packages
sudo dpkg -i *.deb from the directory where you have downloaded the files
5. reboot
------------------------------------------

If the new kernel has successfully loaded, to remove the installed kernels which you don't need
1.You can find them with:
dpkg -l | grep ^i | grep linux-[hi]
2.remove or purge them with dpkg or apt-get:
sudo apt-get remove KERNEL_PACKAGES_TO_REMOVE
for example
sudo apt-get purge linux-image-3.10.0-031000-generic
sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-3.10.0-031000
3.Then update grub:
sudo update-grub
If grub is not installed on the MBR of your first drive you can replace "sdX" with the apropriate disk
sudo grub-install /dev/sdX
------------------------------------------
If you really need to cleanup the unneeded packages you can try:
dpkg -l 'linux-*' | sed '/^ii/!d;/'"$(uname -r | sed "s/\(.*\)-\([^0-9]\+\)/\1/")"'/d;s/^[^ ]* [^ ]* \([^ ]*\).*/\1/;/[0-9]/!d' | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge

Semi-newbie here, with a q190, dual boot (win8 and precise), grub working (finally!), wired working, WIFI NOT working.

I updated the kernel following these instructions : http://www.liberiangeek.net/2013/07/upgrade-to-linux-kernel-3-10-latest-to-resolve-some-issues-in-ubuntu/

Now i have a 3.10 kernel but the wireless is still not recognized ("Additional Drivers" app returns a "No proprietary drivers..." message). Where else can I look?

Thank you in advance.

1. I am not sure where to find this package and how to install it. There isn't much out there on rtl8188 (there is a bunch of info on rtl8192, but I'm not sure how different those are). Is "nonfree" the same thing as "Multiverse repository"? Could you provide/point me to detailed instructions.

2. If you mean "sudo apt-get update", yes, I've done it. If not, please explain.

Thank you.

Matthieu Riou, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc4

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hello,

I would *recommend installing saucy.

Concerning raring, *I think that the crucial test would be if someone will
do a test
if the wifi device could be found, after a package update on raring with,
aftera manually install the kernel v3.10 and assure that
the file /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8188efw.bin exists.

**Concerning quantal or precise,
Even if you will install the latest kernel, and install manually the
rtl8188efw.bin file the device won't be listed.

**-----------------------------------
I have manually downloaded and installed the packages from this site
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

I can confirm the functionality of RTL8188EE since the kernel 3.10 released
on 30-Jun-2013
on http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline

It still works with the newer kernels, I have tested `till v3.11-rc5-saucy.
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc5-saucy/

RTL8188EE was ment to be added in the linux kernel whith the version 3.10
stable
It did not work in the prior versions like

[DIR] v3.10-rc1-saucy/ 13-May-2013 09:27 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc2-saucy/ 20-May-2013 22:52 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc3-saucy/ 26-May-2013 23:51 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc4-saucy/ 02-Jun-2013 08:59 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc5-saucy/ 09-Jun-2013 01:52 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc6-saucy/ 15-Jun-2013 22:51 -
[DIR] v3.10-rc7-saucy/ 22-Jun-2013 21:51 -

The following kernels were tested and I can confirm that RTL8188EE is
functional:

-
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.1
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.2
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.3
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.4
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.5
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10.6
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc1
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc2
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc3
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc4
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

I have tested the steps below:
None of those worked.

  I've tried to:
- - install the Realtek driver for the RTL8188CE (seemed close enough...)
- - install the driver from
https://github.com/tianon/linux-rtlwifi-8188ce
- - install linux-backports-modules-cw
- - upgrade to kernel 3.7
+ - install the Realtek driver for the RTL8188CE (seemed close enough...)
+ - install the driver from
https://github.com/tianon/linux-rtlwifi-8188ce

Which is normal, the changes could be seen in the related email lists - the
rtl8188ee topic, for example
http://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg227415.html

The file rtl8188efw.bin could be found linux-firmware package for Ubuntu
13.04 or newer, I did a search by clicking on
[list of files] @ http://packages.ubuntu.com/saucy/linux-firmware web page.

Np. Thank you very much for your work on this awesome OS!

Just a heads, up: I'm on a Toshiba Satellite L75D-A7280.

@all

i thought i had solved this by replacing precise with raring and updating kernel to 3.10 (see #48 above and the thread leading to it). unfortunately, it is not the case. the wifi connection drops constantly and pops a login window, actually dozens and dozens of login windows (see attached). the only way to get rid of all of them is to kill nm-applet (which takes 300mb+ of memory, more than chrome).

at this point i'm seriously considering returning q190 (a fine machine otherwise), because i can't get ubuntu to run properly on it. any ideas how to fix this once and for all? thx.

Tried the command, but since I'm on 3.10 now because of this thread's solution, it forwarded me to bugzilla.

Just an FYI for anyone reporting after installing 3.10 like me.

Rick D,

I have a L75D-A7280, and the wifi works when you follow the instructions in this answer http://askubuntu.com/a/322737/128334.

As you may already know, the video drivers aren't quite ready, but the generic drivers work ok as long as you're not gaming or doing anything too demanding. Yes, with the generic drivers, unfortunately, the video processing is hoisted on the main proc, but it's not the end of the world for me since I don't really do anything graphically intensive. I would dual boot for now.

You can follow my steps in this question to get your video working http://askubuntu.com/questions/322755/unity-hangs-after-installing-amd-catalyst-13-6-linux-beta-driver

Everything more or less works for me.

Confirmed this device is already working in Saucy (linux-image-3.11.0-4-generic_3.11.0-4.9_amd64.deb, linux-firmware_1.113_all.deb)

Can we skip the Precise and Quantal? Since it needs lots of backporting and kernel-team might not accept a whole driver merging into stable kernel.

Additional info of #69, I tried to backport this driver to Raring, it needs ~6 commits(about 500KB) and contains lots of conflicts, the backporting could be worked out, but I strongly doubt if kernel-team will accept.
