Bug Description

NOTE: My Lenovo IdeaCentre q190 uses a celeron 887 and the SANDY BRIDGE CHIPSET. THIS IS NOT AMD64

I have the Lenovo Ideacentre Q190 configuration #57312246. This unit features the Celeron 887 1.5G chip and the sandy bridge mobile chipset. This little PC came with WIndows8 64 bit loaded. Research online pointed me to this page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI from which I determined that I needed to load the 12.10 Secure remix 64 bit versioin.
This step was necessary since the Lenovo Q190 has secure boot. Since loading 12.10 64bit remix I have received multiple GPU errors and each time I have allowed reports to be sent with the GPU logs. At no time have I had to do a hard reboot.
Upon initial install and updates the Display resolution was set to 1920 X 1080. However, I have reduced the resolution to 1600 X 900. This small step alone seems to have reduced the frequency of the GPU error.
The first thing I noted when I read the created bug report was "achitecture AMD 64". Clearly an INTEL Celeron 887 with the sandybridge chipset is not AMD architecture. So, I don't know if this has a factor in the issue.
I also cannot use WIFI with my Lenovo Q190. There is already a bug report for that. I can run additional tests and provide additonal info upon request (please provide commands necessary to produce the info that you all need). I will also continue to send reports as this bug continues. Thank you in advance.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

hello,

I have installed the 3.9 upstream kernel. My Lenovo Ideacentre q190
booted and loaded the new kernel. The only anomaly so far is a box that
sits to the left txt of which is attached. This window
seems to be perm. and so far I can't closes it. However, this does not
interfere with the left side menu bar.

I need to do some more browsing before I consider this bug fixed.
I will update the bug report shortly.

I will also see if the new kernel has a driver for the Realtek Wifi chip.

kernel-fixed-upstream

Two hours of heavy surfing with multiple tabs open in Firefox and the GPU error has not occurred. The only remaining annoying issue is the "could not apply any of the stored configurations for monitors" box whose text is in the above text file. The "could not apply .;;;" window does not interfere with the left side menu bar so its a minor thing.
Thank you to all for your quick attention.

Just about 10 minutes ago, Update told me that there were updates. So, I applied them.
Now the GPU error that I had before has returned.
I have confirmed that I am still using the 3.9.0-030900rc5-generic upstream kernel. So, I tried running from a terminal window at the command prompt 'ubuntu-bug linux' and I was told that since I am using a mainline kernel that it is better to report the bug
at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/. I have requested an account there to do so.

Clearly one should not apply updates when you are using a mainline kernel. So, I will try to report this new problem there.

Well here it is day two since I applied updates to my Q190. The GPU error/hang/whatever has not reoccurred so far.
Fingers are crossed.

Hi,

Software updater has the kernel 3.0.5-27 available. I have not applied these updates. I am using 3.9.0-030900rc5-generic which solved my GPU hanging problem. So, if I use any kernel other than 3.9.0 then my GPU error will probably come back.
Does this seem likely? Am I correct?
Until the 3.9.0-030900rc5-generic is released is it safe to apply other updates so long as they are not kernel updates?
Thanks

I also has the same problem with ubuntu kernel 3.5.0-27, the previous version 3.5.0-21 worked fine. My laptop is a Dell Latitude 5420 with sandy bridge chipset and Intel HD3000 VGA. GPU hangs happens once in awhile, after doing some git bisecting, I found that this patch seems to be the cause for the problem:

drm/i915: GFX_MODE Flush TLB Invalidate Mode must be '1' for scanline waits

Includes is my git bisect log.

bigfootnmd,

This looks like another duplicate of bug 1140716.
Could you please test the latest kernel in -updates (3.5.0-31.52) and confirm that this bug is fixed? Thanks.

Hi,

I am already using the 3.9.00rc5 kernel which was recommended by one of
the bug solvers.
This kernel is working great for me. The GPU hang does not occur.

So, I see no point in falling all the way back to a 3.5 kernel.

I am also waiting for the 3.10 kernel since this kernel will have WIFI
drivers for the wifi chip on my Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190.

So for the present time I think I will stay where I am with 12.10.

Thank you.

Fair enough - although I'd strongly advise against running a fairly random release candidate just because "it works".
Note that comment #5 asked you to *test* the latest mainline build, Joseph didn't recommend to run it over a longer period of time.
There's a reason why after 3.9-rc5 there's a rc6, rc7 and rc8...

Hello again,

Yesterday I upgraded 12.10 with UFEI to 13.04 using the Upgrade feature. So, now that I have moved to 13.04
I have confirmed that I am still using 3.9-rc5. So, I know where the mainline build kernels are. So where do I get the current kernel for 13.04 RARING? Please provide full path.

Thank you.
