Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

It looks like one of the commits in the radeon driver that is included in the 3.2.0-31.50 Ubuntu kernel has been recently reverted upstreams. This commit (985f61f7ee647ad570c05eab0b74915da2ac8e19 "drm/radeon: rework pll selection (v3)") seems to cause some regressions.

This may not be related with this bug report, but I'm building a test kernel with this commit reverted so that you can test. I'll post the link here once the build is complet.

Hi Luis, according to the changelog, 3.2.0-31.50 does not have the commit in question while 3.2.0-32.51 (-proposed) does. Both kernels are showing the problematic behaviour here. Thanks for looking into this, much appreciated.

Hi Simon, you're absolutely right: thanks for paying attention to that. Now, I took another look at the changelog and here's the list of "suspicious" commits in that version:

be05980 drm/radeon: do not reenable crtc after moving vram start address
899d1d5 drm/radeon: fix bank tiling parameters on cayman
8b4d42b drm/radeon: fix bank tiling parameters on evergreen

What I've done was to build a new test kernel with these 3 commits reverted and uploaded it here:

http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp1058303/v1/

(there's a 32 bits and a 64 bits version).

Could someone having this issue give it a try (picking the correct version)? If reverting these commits solves the problem, we will need to find out exactly which one(s) is the responsible for the issue.

Hi Luis, so far so good, 18 reboots without problem using the 64bit build, thanks!

Great, so from all these tests, we could say that the faulty commit is:

be05980 drm/radeon: do not reenable crtc after moving vram start address

(it could also be a combination of these 3 commits...)

So, I've built a (final??) test kernel that contains only:

be05980 drm/radeon: do not reenable crtc after moving vram start address

and reverts:
899d1d5 drm/radeon: fix bank tiling parameters on cayman
8b4d42b drm/radeon: fix bank tiling parameters on evergreen

All going well, this kernel should *fail* :-)

I've reporter this upstream. It looks like commit 62444b7462a2b98bc78d68736c03a7c4e66ba7e2 ("drm/radeon: properly handle

Unfortunately, the commit had a few dependencies and I had to cherry-pick a few other commits. Here's the list of commits included in the test kernel:

3ae19b750bdc09ce233e1504348320141593ffda drm/radeon/kms: add wait_for_vblank asic callback

4a15903db02026728d0cf2755c6fabae16b8db6a drm/radeon/dce4+: don't use radeon_crtc for vblank callback
62444b7462a2b98bc78d68736c03a7c4e66ba7e2 drm/radeon: properly handle mc_stop/mc_resume on evergreen+ (v2)

I've followed this issue upstreams and a patch has been proposed to solve the issue. Basically, it is the same as the one in comment #22 (commit 62444b7462a2b98bc78d68736c03a7c4e66ba7e2), but without all the other commits listed. This patch is a backport containing already all the dependencies, and will probably be the one accepted upstreams.

As usual, I've uploaded a new test kernel containing this solution. Could you please give it a quick test and confirm this also fixes the issue? Here's the link:

@Cosimo, just to make you have that exact bug, do you have an ATI/AMD
graphic card that gives a black screen once in a while on boot while the
box still answers to ping/SSH? Or are you see an actual freeze (no
SSH/ping)?

I'm not sure if it replies to ping or ssh, but after the blank screen I can hear the login screen sound, so I guess the PC is still working. I can experience the blank screen more or less once every two reboot. It started after kernel upgrade to 3.2.0-31.

Yesterday I upgraded to -32 but it didn't solve. Now I've setup the 3.2.0-30 as default kernel on grub.

That looks like the same bug indeed. You can give a try to the kernel
built by Luis:

http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp1058303/v6/

It should fix your problem until an official Ubuntu kernel integrates
the patches.

I believe I have this issue with my AO722 on quantal, though my symptoms are a little different as I have a cryptsetup root, so I never get to the passphrase prompt. I do typically get a black screen on first boot, but can ctrl-alt-del, and boot proceeds normally the second time through.

My question is this: the test kernels henrix posted are 3.2 series. quantal's on 3.5. Can I use these safely? Or should I expect quantal to have this fix integrated?

Indeed this doesn't look like the same bug. Could you try to confirm you
don't have the same log errors in syslog when it happens? Could this be
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plymouth/+bug/939283 ? If not,
that would worth reporting a new bug.
