Thanks. I did try it and it didn't do anything for my symptoms, unfortunately; I'm probably barking up the wrong tree.

The comments in this bug did prompt me, however, to try blindly typing my passphrase in to unlock the drive, which worked, surprisingly. And with that, once X starts, the display works...
