Bug Description

Ubuntu Release: Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal beta1
Package version: libreoffice-gtk
Package version: 1:3.6.1~rc2-1ubuntu3
Expected behavior: It should be possible to launch LO actions from the HUD.
Actual behavior: Libreoffice commands are not shown in the HUD.

According to comments, this is the case for:
- Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04
- LibreOffice cycles 3.6 and 4.0

I also have this issue, it may be related to all menu items being greyed out inconsistently (Bug #1051556).

HUD works well before activating the menu using commit 627731abde0d934a8cd172de9b0ee5eb7d3b9667. After activating a menu, some items could be updated and HUD doesn't work anymore although actions are visible using D-Feet.

I have seen problems with the menus in LibreOffice as well - there were no menus in the top bar and no commands showing up in the HUD. I followed the suggestion on Bug #1061225 to install the "lo-menu" package and that restored the menu to the top bar but still no change to the HUD.

Are the two issues unrelated? And why is the lo-menu package not installed by default? (I have a fresh install of 12.10 Beta 2)

Marius B. Kotsbak (mariusko) wrote :

There is no "lo-menu" package. Maybe you mean the transitional package "lo-menubar", which ensures that package "libreoffice-gtk" is installed.

Strange that I don't experience this now. What are the exact steps to reproduce (e.g. ALT->"new presentation"?)? Do you see any hits at all in the HUD or is just Libre Office menu elements missing?

Marius B. Kotsbak (mariusko) wrote :

Also do you reproduce this when running a Quantal live CD/USB? And are all updates installed?

I just tried Writer from a daily build live USB. Same result, I'm afraid
the problem remains.

BUT: I just found that the HUD stops working in Writer whenever I open the
formula editor. It does not work in the equation editor itself, and also
stops working in the main Writer window after formula editing is finished.

This behaviour seems to be reproducible, maybe this is of some help.

Update:

I can't be sure if there is a connection, but after todays Compiz update, the HUD in LO doesn't work at all on this computer any more. Several reboots later and testing it on a different computer lead to the same results.

Jakub Peša (jakubpesa) wrote :

I would like to point out that in my case HUD in 12.10 sometimes works with LibreOffice, usually after runnging command unity -- replace, but when I close a LO window and I open a different document, it suddenly doesn't work again an I have to restart Unity again (usually for several times). In Ubuntu 12.04 with lo-menubar package everyting worked fine.

Jakub Peša (jakubpesa) wrote :

And now I can add to my previous post that when I have 2 open LO windows and HUD is working in one LO window, but doesn't work in the other one.

The combination of this and bug 1074528 is deadly. This bug appeared before the other, but I don't know whether there's any causal relationship between the two.

At any rate, I currently have no way of accessing the menus in LibreOffice (via the HUD or otherwise), so I hope this will get fixed soon.

As with Scott I have the same issue with this and Bug #1074528 occuring.

4. Insert a formula in the new document, leave the formula editor, back to document
5. Confirm that HUD is not working anymore, e.g. Alt, "save" does not bring up File > Save as would be expected

Have a similar issue. I have HUD working on writer when i open a new documents, but as soon as i open any saved file by whatever way - HUD stops searching the libreoffice writer.

Still experiencing this problem on a fully updated 12.10, (which has been upgraded from a 12.04 install) but it's not consitent. The problem only occurs for me when opening existing documents, about 80% of the time:
- open libreoffice program, press alt: results from libreoffice menus
- open libreoffice existing document, press alt: results from indicator menus (top bar)

I just tried the unity --replace trick jacubpesa mentioned some posts up:
- open existing libreoffice document, press alt: results from indicator menus (top bar)
- unity --replace
- hud works for the opened document

I never got to use the HUD with LibreOffice, even with the newest LO 4.0.2.1 from the LO 4.0 PPA on Ubuntu 12.10 up to date with Proposed activated.
I just get results from the indicators, even though the first HUD icon that appears is the right LO one.

LibreOffice is probably the only app that makes me want to use the HUD because of its extended menus and diverse functions.

How come no one is looking into it? Is the problem in Raring too?

This is one of the applications where the HUD is needed the most. However on raring, i noticed that if the app is run from the dash (with no file to open), the HUD works fine, but if u open a file, the HUD is not working.

Aibara Iduas (aibaraiduas) wrote :

Is there a workaround for this? Like some way to install lo-menubar in Raring?

+1 for #38 ; this is what I get as well (on Raring, upgrade through 12.04 > 12.10 > 13.04 )

If you start LibreOffice by opening a document from Nautilus, or from picking a file in the dash, the first window does not get HUD integration.

If you start the app "raw" without opening a file, HUD integration works just fine.

Subsequent LibreOffice windows get HUD integration regardless of how you start them ; so if you open a text document, and then a spreadsheet, the document has no HUD, but the spreadsheet does.

If you close all windows, the problem recurs with the next window opened.

I agree with dimovnike. LibreOffice Writer and Calc will not open when double clicking a file. Also I have disabled the global menu using Unsettings and then "sudo apt-get remove thunderbird-globalmenu". Only LibreOffice now shows global menu and cannot seem to disable it. Using 13.04 and LO 4. 64 bit

Franko Burolo (fburolo) wrote :

Same here on Raring, fresh install. And I am experiencing the same as described in comments #38 and #40.

And I agree, LibreOffice is one of the places where the HUD is most useful, so this is not a trivial issue at all.

Franko Burolo (fburolo) wrote :

...actually, it is even worse than described in the comments. The HUD in LibreOffice Writer works only with a blank page. The very moment I start to type anything, it stops working!

I see the same problem in LO 4.0.2.2 on 64-bit a fresh installation of Raring. In addition to the HUD not working, LO's traditional menu mnemonics don't work, (# 739184 "[Libreoffice] Mnemonics do not work in Unity").

tompta (tompta) wrote :

Same as #43. This bug is consistent for me. When I start Writer or Calc I can search the menus with Alt. But as soon as I edit this blank document and I try to do the menu search again I can actually see the commands of Writer for a second, but then they immeadiately dissapear and I'm not able to search in the menus anymore. Only the commands from tray apps are appearing.
When opening a document from nautilus or dash I'm able to use the HUD with .docx files in Writer, but again until I make any changes in the document. The HUD is not working at all with odt, doc, ods, xls and xlsx files no matter if I'm opening from dash or nautilus.

I had this problem in 12.10, still have in fresh install of 13.04 64bit

nicolas kleinklaus (nknico) wrote :

Why nobody is assigned to this bug ? It is reported since more than a year !

If this is fixed by restarting unity with:
 unity --replace
as comment #23 suggests, I have to assume this is a bug in either unity or HUD not watching the state correctly. Marking as Incomplete in LibreOffice until there is a clear indication of LibreOffices GMenuModel implementation being at fault here.

This bug is not only unassigned, but also of undecided importance, for over a year now. And I am also watching another bug, related to Network Manager: though marked as of high importance, it is still being ignored ever since January. Ubuntu core bug reporting started to feel very frustrating... :-/

Nautilus commands are not displayed, too. Maybe it's generally HUD-related, and not LibreOffice-related.
Tested under Raring.

Your argument seems plausible. However, in my case and several others the HUD and libreoffice actually do communicate. But only in a "fresh instance" of libreoffice in which no document has been opened or created.

Let me explain with an example: I launch libreoffice writer from the launcher, wait serveral seconds, bring up the HUD and start typing. For example "recent thesis" to open my file thesis.odt which is listed in "Recent Documents" in the "File" menu. The HUD shows all options in the libreoffice menus as would be expected, no bug noticed so far.
However, once the file is opened the HUD does not work anymore.

Therefore I assume that (even though I agree the ubuntu HUD isn't very stable) this particular bug is in LibreOffice. After all, it is a change in libreoffice that makes the HUD not work properly.

Yep, the same here with the "fresh instance". I've noticed it a while ago, too.

Derek Darves (darves) wrote :

I have this issue with 13.04 and LO 4.1 - just confirming it is present in newest versions. Opening a "fresh instance" does not enable HUD for me, either, as with other users.

Franko Burolo (fburolo) wrote :

It seems obvious to me that the HUD (or at least the desktop version of it) is a dead project. Look at the other HUD related bug reports, almost all of them are unassigned. This one is the most heated of them all, and it is still unassigned, for almost a year now! And the bug is only worsening from release to release... It seems like the devs just don't care about it anymore. RIP HUD...

Correct me if I am wrong but google documents have its own sort of HUD.
How convenient is that? :)

Franko Burolo (fburolo) wrote :

I hope it, too... Still didn't try the beta, though. And it is still frustrating to feel as a bug was fixed just "accidentally". It is still unassigned here... The feeling of being ignored is still here.

Till, can you confirm that it works after the first try and not just before you modify anything?

Cheers

Till Sachau (till-sachau) wrote :

It works after the first try, too. What you describe used to be precisely my problem. This has been overcome now.

It does (rarely) happen that the drop down list with the last used commands in the HUD doesn't respond. This can be overcome by a new search, after that also the drop down list works again.

Despite this little glitch, I'm quite happy with the HUD now.

Colin Law (colin-law) wrote :

It is not fixed for me in Saucy. Start Writer, use the hud to open a file. Try to use the hud to do File > Close, the hud appears but clicking Close does nothing.

Colin, this is suddenly (since today?) also the case on my machine. Some update of whatever package seems to have broken it again. Hope this gets fixed again for the release.

Franko Burolo (fburolo) wrote :

Seems like the HUD is really working fine with LibreOffice in Saucy for me, too. At least for now. I freshly installed Saucy after it was officially released.
But now the HUD doesn't look into indicators at all... But that goes for another bug report. The LibreOffice issue, which is much more cirtical for me, seems to be fixed now.

So it works here in Saucy and is expected to do so with LibreOffice upstream commit 26d092b3635680248f8b176564409e6c0c24bfbf. So if you still experience this please file a new bug with an exact reproduction scenario.
