I just tried Writer from a daily build live USB. Same result, I'm afraid the problem remains.

BUT: I just found that the HUD stops working in Writer whenever I open the formula editor. It does not work in the equation editor itself, and also stops working in the main Writer window after formula editing is finished.

This behaviour seems to be reproducible.
