hear the old login sound each time. I disabled the "gnome Login Sound"
startup in the Sessions Preferences. This stopped the crash message

So it could be a problem of automatically adding the groups to the
first user? You should open a new bug if that's the case.

I manually added myself in most of them:
forger@ubuntu:~$ groups
forger adm lp dialout fax cdrom tape audio dip video plugdev netdev
scanner fuse lpadmin pulse pulse-access pulse-rt admin sambashare
vboxusers boinc libvirtd

I have another user which have created, and have set her user
privileges through System > Administration > Users and groups >
Properties > User privileges:
$ groups iva
iva dialout fax cdrom tape audio dip video netdev scanner fuse lpadmin
sambashare

I also noticed that you weren't in the "audio" group. (The "Use audio
devices" privilege in Users and Groups)

One would expect that the first user would be automatically added to the most appropriate groups and I am guessing the three 'pulse' groups should be included and aren't.

I came across the 'canberra' warning/error completely by accident and adding myself to the 'pulse' groups came about via another 'minor' issue I was working on.

Up until that point I simply used the default groups assigned without any major hassle; nothing actually dying but a minor problem with pulseaudio not sharing resources .i.e playing an mp3 and xchat sound effects (.wav files) not being played, which now also appears fixed.

barry@serenity:~$ groups barry
barry adm dialout cdrom plugdev fuse lpadmin pulse pulse-access pulse-rt admin sambashare

I added myself to the 'fuse' group remembering I needed that in the 32-Bit OS's.

Savvas Radevic (medigeek) wrote :

As I said, try this:
sudo adduser barry audio

Remove yourself from the pulse* groups, just to see if it works with
"audio" group which is the default one to use audio devices.

Log out and log back in, see if there are any errors again :)

Alchera (barrysuridge) wrote :

Logged out/in and no error/warning regarding 'canberra'.

It would appear then that the default user groups should include audio.

This appears not to be a problem on x86_32 systems which begs the question, "why?".

Savvas Radevic (medigeek) wrote :

You should really create a new bug about the default user groups for
the first user. :)

If I were you, I would create a virtual machine with virtualbox,
install the latest Ubuntu (Ubuntu jaunty), and check out the default
groups of the first user. Maybe it's changed in the latest release:

The extremist,
The intrepid Live CD does not count in the bug reports, there are a
lot of upgrades that I think made this bug disappear (or get fixed).
