No usplash on shutdown with kdm

Bug Description

The usplash shutdown screen won't appear when using kdm. It works fine with gdm, which had been patched recently to run usplash_down before shutdown, so kdm should do the same.

The latest kdm (4:3.5.1-0ubuntu14) is patched to run usplash on shutdown. It does work when I shut down from the kdm login screen. However, when I shut down from a running kde session, I get the usual text mode shutdown, but with brown text...

Brown text? Can you post a photo of your screen?
Do you have also ubuntu-desktop installed on your system or do you just have Kubuntu?

I have just checked on my system and I get proper usplash shutdown both on doing shutdown from kdm login page or shutting down if I am already logged into my KDE session.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I'm using the ubuntu splash screen, not the kubuntu one, so brown is kind of expected.
I have no way to make a photo of it at the moment. It's just the normal text mode shutdown (i.e. no ubuntu logo, the usual console font, and "fullscreen" text), but in light brown, or probably blue if I'd install the kubuntu usplash artwork.
It might be worth mentioning that this is a breezy installation, upgraded to dapper about a week ago.

One small correction/addition: It doesn't work *most of the time*, but sometimes it actually does. I shut the machine down about a dozen times within the past few days (always from a kde session), and got a working usplash twice, and the rest of the time I got the effect described above...

Since it's supposed to have a shut down splash as it is, this is a bug not a wishlist.

Before I saw this bug I didn't actually realize there was supposed to be a shutdown splash. Currently, I just get blue text.
Kubuntu dapper amd64, latest updates.

Also have seen this problem. Shutting down from a KDE session may or may not start the shutdown splash; there's doesn't seem to be any correlation to why it happens. Works perfectly from KDM, though.

Nope, this is not fixed, at least not on my machine. The splash screen does appear after about two thirds of the shutdown process (that is, when /etc/init.d/sendsigs is run), but before that, I still get the text mode shutdown...

Also, occasionally I get a completely garbled splash screen, with both usplash and text mode showing at the same time, causing very weird artifacts. While that *might* be related to the Nvidia driver, the overall issue is not (also happens with the nv driver).

My bad, you are right it only shows the splash screen for the last few steps of shut down.

This whole thing makes me wonder... why is it the display managers job to run usplash_down at all?!
Wouldn't it make more sense if this was done by an init script? In fact, the problem described in this bug report goes away if I modify kdm to not run usplash_down, and instead create a file /etc/rc[06].d/K00usplash_down to do this (note that this should be run before K01kdm!).

And while we're at it, AFAICT this would also solve another slight issue, namely that running /etc/init.d/kdm stop from the console currently switches to a splash screen, forcing me to press alt-f1 to get back to the console.

Sometimes it shows it for the first part of shutdown (until "terminating remaining processes") and sometimes it doesn't. It always shows it starting at "unmounting remote filesystems".

When it does show all of it, it refreshes (starts the list over) at that point.

I agree with Dominic Sacré : It's not the DM's job to run usplash_down at all. Someone please add this as a specification for Edgy Eft.

I can confirm this, too, and it's not been intermittent for now.

When I logout from my KDE session, I just get a text-mode shutdown (with blue text most of the times, butsometimes withnormal gray text).

After the step where all processes are terminated, the usplash screen does appear.

For me, too, the splash screen works properly if I shutdown directly from KDM's Session menu, or by means of a "sudo reboot" (not tried "halt" or "shutdown").

Using Kubuntu Edgy now. I'm finding that if I log out of KDE and shutdown from KDM, the splash works. However, the splash doesn't show up (instead, the screen is blank) if I choose to shutdown from KDE without logging out first.

I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 usin kubuntu 6.10 edgy eft.

This this problem seemed to be intermitant. I discovered that if I am running on AC I am able to do shutdown or reboot from the desktop most of the time. One out of five or six hang. I do not get a splash screen. I either just get a blank screen with the back light on or a garbled mess. But after an extended period of time there is a very short splash screen and then shutdown. When I am running on battery the grey or garbled screen will come up and just hang, never shutdown. Have waited over thirty minutes.

I am always able while on AC or DC to end session and go back to the login manager screen and shutdown or logout.

Okay, found something interesting.

With edgy (and I assume this is the same with feisty), when I shutdown straight from KDE without logging out to KDM, the Usplash image shows up for a second before going black, then reappearing during the shutdown splash refresh (where the meter goes to 0, then goes back to having about 25% filled and then continues). However, I found that if I kill the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace after shutting down, but *before* the switch to Usplash, the shutdown theme is shown in it's entirety without going black. Can anybody else who has this problem confirms that this happens on their machine, and it's not just a fluke on my machine.

Er, correction on my last comment - I meant "after I choose to shut down"; obviously you can't kill the X server when the system's already off. :B

Nael I solved this problem on my laptop by adding this line.

TerminateServer=True

to /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc in the [X-:*-Core] section.

Well I have the same problem here, using Kubuntu 6.10 with KDE 3.5.6. Usplash show for a fraction of a second and then dissapears and the screen goes black.

I have the "TerminateServer=True" line in my kdmrc file (to solve a problem with logout related to ATI fglrx drivers) and usplash still doesn't work.

Well, it fails only on my portable computer, but not in my desktop one, which has a nvidia graphics card. Can it be ralated to the fglrx drivers?

kdm should _not_ start usplash. That should really be done by some init-script.

I get the usplash for just some seconds also (2-3) and then i get a black screen and the laptop halts normally. I'm also using an ATI card with fglrx.

I have a similar effect on my PC with Kubuntu 7.04 release version. I have it set to autologin, and if I select shutdown the screen goes black until just before it switches off and the down splash appears for about 1/2 a second.

However, if I log out first and select shutdown from the login manager, the down slash always works. Also if I log out and back in, and then select shutdown, the down splash works.

I know its only a visual effect, but it could make someone panic and start hitting keys.
