If I stop KDM it hangs on usplash (Kubuntu Edgy)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdm

If I log out of KDE, press CTRL+ALT+F1 and type "sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop" the splash screen shows up (and remains idle).

I have to press ALT+F1 to get back to the console.

This doesn't happen on Ubuntu and GDM. Only Kubuntu is affected by this bug.

I'm using Kubuntu Edgy with KDE 3.5.5 (I had the same problem on Dapper)

Thank you for reporting this bug.
Are you using an nvidia card with the nvidia driver?

This sounds like the duplicates of Bug 32389.

Yes, I do use the nvidia driver.

It's not the same problem as the one in the other bugreport.

And I can reproduce the problem even without using the "nvidia" driver e.g. using "nv"

I confirm this on up to date feisty.

kdm starts usplash when it is terminating.

It should _not_ do that.

That should be done in some init-script like allready sayed here by someone else:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/34821/comments/11

I made some dirty patch for /etc/init.d/kdm

but it does not help when terminating kdm from its menu.

additional workaround to get usplash on shutdown again
(unfortunately does some blinking)

Hope kdm will be fixed soon, so this stuff becomes unnecessary :-/

Fixed version - usplash only when 'splash' is really in kernel boot paramteters.

Additional comment:
usplash_down seems to be invoked by /etc/init.d/sendsigs too on reboot and shutdown, but _after_ all services are stopped and all remaining processes are terminated - which is nearly useless as it is too late IMHO.
