Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-control

Using Gutsy, I'm not able to control the volume of my Plantronics DSP 400 USB headset via the gnome-volume-control. It does work properly for my SB live 5.1.

I am able to properly control the volume using the curses alsamixer, so it seems related to the gnome-volume-control interfaces only.

Using the keyboard volume controls results in the same effect as using the gnome-volume-control.

When I run the gnome-volume-control and the curses alsamixer at the same time, I start seeing the same effects in the curses version. I only have to change the card in the gnome-volume-control to return the curses alsamixer back to correct functioning.

I have uploaded a video of what I'm seeing here:

I got a similar issue on the plantronics .500 usb headset. When using gnome volume control it turns the volume on the left side down. With alsamixer I am able to control both sides.

*bump*

Is there any direction we should go look for. Any logs needed? Help would be much appreciated as Plantronic headsets aren't excatly what you would call niche market ;-)

Thanks guys!

I see the same problem with my Logitech USB headset. It's possible that it's related to bug 155109.

This bug belongs to the gnome-volume-control, not to gnome-volume-manager. So the title of this Bug is wrong.

But I have exactly the same problem. The gnome-volume-control on my system shows the same behavior. But it seems that the bug isn't in the gnome-media package, because this is a problem that seems to be exclusively with USB audio output. This let guess, that the bug is in the underlying code (gstreamer or alsa code).

This bug has been around for a long time and is really annoying... any chance of fixing it? I use Skype and my Plantronics USB headset as my main telephone, and I've got to deal with this constantly.

While we're at it, there are some other features that would be great to have with USB headsets:
- remember settings when you disconnect and reconnect the device
- volume buttons on headset control headset volume
- bug: mute button light is ON when you plug in the plantronics headset, but it's not muted. Mute button doesn't actually seem to control anything. The "toggle audio recording from microphone" switch in gnome volume control toggles the light on the device, but toggling button on device doesn't toggle the the switch in volume control.

The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)
