Bug Description

Using Release: 9.10
Using Cups 1.4.1

I was trying to print a test page, it was put into the printer queue, but nothing happens next. The task sits in the queue for a long time.

Before this bug I experienced the problem that the task quickly disappeared from the queue. Then I had the similar problem as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/450513

Reinstalling printer was done as described here: http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/.

After reinstalling the printer I have what I've described.

I've just found out that if I run a virtual machine with Windows XP on it, I can print from there. This of course can be a kind of solution of the problem, but not very convenient.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in cups.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 489750

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

To whom it may concern:
I am no longer using Hardy Heron, and my HP Laserjet 1018 has been
replaced. You can remove me from the technical notice list.
Thank you

Still issue in Oneiric. Discription of the bug is still the same but there is sometimes useful workaround - power one printer before OS boot up. This workaround work not everytime.

Hello Dmitry,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups. You made this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu and cups have been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 489750
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and cups better.
