Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

I did a fresh install of kubuntu 9.10.
Installed my printer (Minolta PagePro 8L via parallel port) via the kde printer system settings. It was detected automatically.
Printing any document (including the test page) results in following:
- the system tray printer applet is shown very shortly
- no error message is displayed
- no document appears at the printer

Previous versions of Kubuntu worked with this printer.

I don't think it's a duplicate of bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489750
Print jobs quickly disappear from the queue. CPU and memory usage are normal.

Upgraded foomatic-filters and cups from proposed archive as suggested in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/foomatic-filters/+bug/463059

Doesn't help :-(

Does this problem occur with all files and applications? If there are only special files or applications which do not print, please tell which and attach the files.

Can you run the following commands in a terminal window:

cupsctl FileDevice=yes
lpadmin -p test -E -v file:/tmp/printout /etc/cups/ppd/Drucker.ppd

Now print the same which you did not succeed to print on your printer but print to the new printer "test". Then run the command

ls -l /tmp/printout

and post the output here. Run

chmod 777 /tmp/printout

and attach /tmp/printout to this bug report.

Run also the command

sudo cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport#/autoprobe*

and post the output here.

The problem is not specific to an application, no printjob works. Even the test page fails.

sudo cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/autoprobe*

The ticket should not have been expired. Ingo always provided timely feedback. Reopening.

Ingo, I had a suspicion as to what might have been going on in your case, but it turns out it must be something else. JFTR, are you still experiencing this in a more recent release?

Hello Ingo,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with cups. You made this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu and cups have been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 487546
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and cups better.
G
