Yes I reproduced it and recorded it with Istanbul, I do not know unfortunately were the file is stored. It should be: ~/desktop-recording.ogg. There is nothing there. Anyway, I tried it twice, but I did not get an error report. Instead I found again that only 3 GB of memory gets detected, while 4 GB is installed. I described this earlier in the memtest86 bug. As soon as 100% of memory is reached, it crashes. Swap stays at about 10% throughout.

Please find screenshots in attachment, virtualbox allows me to select 3.7 GB of memory (leaving 300 MB for the host), while gnome-system-monitor recognises only 3GB. I have described this problem on the ubuntu forum. See link.

Hi there, I think it is impossible to describe this bug on a single bug per bug report basis. Could you please check out my post about BIOS settings being altered, possibly by are in relationship with the consolekit bug(s)?

The reason I initially described this bug as a potential security risk, is due to the fact that it did lead under a previous form to a freeze up of synaptic, leaving my password visible on screen for more than 2 hours (see slideshow).

Since this bug is difficult to invoke on purpose, but often occurs and leaves my system unrepairable about every three days, forcing me to reinstall without partitioning, I think it is better to bundle my experiences on the ubuntu forum first:

I don't understand you. Did you retry what you did and recreate this very bug (APTonCD crashing when creating the disk)? If so, what exactly did you do? How many packages did you select?
Please note that this bug report is only about the APTonCD issue.

Yes I did reproduce it twice. I agree this is a memory issue. Look at the slides. I also added a series of slides about the second attempt I did when trying to monitor the event. I want to say also that backtrace does not work for me. Look below:

The programs I had running at the time of my second reproduction were Firefox, gnome-terminal, gnome-system-monitor, md5sum /dev/cdrom and deluge-torrent. You can see them in my slight-show. I tried videocapture with Istanbul and vnc2sfw, but it did not work. The slide show should be a good alternative. Anyway, the behaviour I saw was indicative of a BIOS issue. Please check out my post at the forum for more information. I have a discrepancy between the amount of memory recognised by gnome-volume-monitor and VirtualBox. There is 4 GB of memory installed on 2 memory chips of 2 GB each. Virtualbox recognises the correct amount of memory, while gnome-system-monitor, memtest86 and BIOS only recognised 3GB. As I have posted earlier, the eBay-vendor from whom I purchased the laptop, and who is currently delisted, might have tempered with the memory. The amount of memory used by aptoncd increased linearly while aptoncd proceeded with loading applications. When it nears 100% of 3 GB, it invariably crashes. Also I noted that the delug-torrent download used something in the line of 10 % of the slightly over 2 GB swap, but when APTonCD is started, this sometimes falls below 3%, while the RAM nears 3 GB usage.

Hi,

I have created a valgrind.log.

My BIOS settings are:

Phoenix Trusted Core (tm)
BIOS Version: v1.23
VGA BIOS Version: 1264
KBC Version: 08.26

Also look at my screenshots, have I accidentally installed the wrong BIOS (Asus)?

Cheers,

Thomas

version 2.1.8 Python Powered Gnu's Not Unix

Hi there,

I am going to stop reporting bug reports for now, as you people will not read them anyway.

I have confirmed with the help of canonical support that the laptop I am using has no defective hardware. The BIOS is not broke, since I have reflashed the BIOS with an upgraded version, from the Acer website. For the few bugs I could easily reproduce this does not change a thing. What we have found out is that the BIOS developed by the Phoenix people for Acer, does not support 4 GB. Acer claims that the system supports 4 GB, but the people from Phoenix must have limited the BIOS to 3 GB, since it was made for use with Windows 32-bit. The system has two identical sodim sockets and I have two identical 2 GB chips, that were sold to me fully installed by an official eBay reseller. I have tested both sockets and both chips by memtest86+ 1.65 1.70 and 2.01. Everything came up clean except the alfa 5 2.01 test, which had a bug, but is now fixed. I had a problem before when trying to upgrade to Vista Ultimate, as the 32-bit only recognises 3 GB. Back then a faulty memtest86+ test surfaced. I have the memtest86+ version in backup, but it is preinstalled and backed up with Windows Live OneCare and I have no idea how to determine the version number. Really it does not change anything, as when I remove one of the chips, the same bugs seem to persist. That is, the ones that are easily reproducible. I now get less crashes both due to the fact that I now only run Ubuntu repositories, other than VirtualBox 2.0.2 and Skype-debian as described in the community docs, as well as alfa 6 and maybe also because I only use 2 GB and the BIOS update. I do use many multiverse and restricted applications though.

I maybe still able to help with the following data:

My AptonCD bug persists. Only faster since I now use only 2 GB RAM. I have tracked and described this behaviour with gnome-system-monitor and Valgrind log several weeks ago, but Tormod would not look into it since he suspected hardware failure. I have uploaded the log file. Please tell me which piece of hardware is malfunctioning and which stress test you propose to validate it. Really, my hardware is just working fine as far as I can tell.

Unfortunately the flashrom tool does not work either, so I do not have an easy way to reflash the BIOS. Otherwise I would certainly reflash it with u-boot to see if there is any difference. I have reflashed the BIOS with the latest version provided to me by Acer.

Now that may be a fair remark there Kjell,

still this bug is repeatable and on a system with ubuntu repositories only. Although many of these being from universe and/or multiverse. Also the hardware is working correctly unless you can tell me which piece of hardware is not and say what stress test I need to validate this. Also be kind enough please to continue your private communication over here so someone with more power can have a look at this. Look at the screenshots for swap usage. The first one is with deluge running, the second one is with nothing else running except gnome-terminal, gnome-system-monitor and aptoncd.

 Bug #280961:
This report is private
I had this today on a fully updated system, so either the fix released status is in doubt, or it is a new bug, or a stale crash report, but still I checked /var/crash recently end deleted all reports, so I doubt the last option. If you check this developers might get it quicker and also the last bug report I commented on and you relocated after the backtrace, created an avalanche of people asking to unsubscribe them, probably due to a launchpad bug.
Thanks,
Thomas
