Does your sound work under other OS like windows? we need to confirm it is not a HW issue first.

I just launched VirtualBox and it did not work in Windows 7. But I'm not
sure if that's what you wanted. I don't have Windows installed.

I tried the install disc in live user mode. I did not want to overwrite all my files, so I didn't do a fresh install. I don't know if the live user mode not working with sound tells you anything. HDMI doesn't work either. I saw it earlier, but it has disappeared. Also, when I uninstalled and purged alsa according to one of the online suggestions, and reinstalled it, alsamixer no longer loads, saying "no such file or directory", and if I load it with -c 1, it says invalid card.

I tried renaming the pulse folder to pulse_old under .config like someone else suggested online, and that didn't fix anything.

I should also mention this has happened before, but I just reinstalled Ubuntu. I'm backing everything up to do that right now, but it was something I wanted to avoid due to the hassle. However, I'm seeing it is becoming a bigger hassle to try to fix it without a fresh install.

It is NOT the hardware! After wasting hours trying to get a Windows 10 disc to install so I can update the BIOS, I put the Ubuntu install disc back in and clicked to install rather than try. When the install page loaded up, I decided to try the sound to see if it worked, and it did work! If you can give me something to try to fix it before I have everything backed up for reinstallation, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, I'm going forward with reinstallation.
